I opened my office in Bend, Oregon in May 2008.
I split my practice between criminal defense and small business.
I work with and represent people charged with crimes, from misdemeanors to violent felonies.
I assist small business owners in establishing and maintaining their businesses.
I have worked as a legal assistant for the Alameda County Public Defender (in California) and for an immigration and civil rights nonprofit group (National Legal Sanctuary for Community Advancement) in San Francisco, California.
Prior to becoming a lawyer I held a wide variety of jobs including ranch-hand, fast-food server, bartender, laboratory technologist, security officer, Peace Corps volunteer and website designer.
I prefer clients who are proactive in educating themselves. My job as a lawyer is to aid others in helping themselves. My best relationships with clients are those relationships which are most like a partnership - the two of us working together in the best interests of the client. Clients who are educated, or work on getting educated, about their case make the best partners.
I am happy to review documents prepared by clients.
I am happy to provide basic coaching, in an initial consultation, to people who want to represent themselves.
I became a lawyer for two reasons. The first is that I like to help and empower people, especially when they are facing life changing events and challenges. The second reason is that the law is fascinating and challenging to me. The best lawyers are always learning - there is no such thing as knowing enough. I learn something new, sometimes many new things, every day.
Having grown up on a ranch I learned at a very early age that my actions can and do have serious consequences for others. The health of the land and the lives of our animals depended in large part on my doing my job well. Today, I know that my clients' well-being depends on my doing my job well and I am committed to doing just that.
In the last 13 years I have held a variety of jobs and lived in a variety of places. In all this varied experience I have found one constant: people the world over are interesting, good and valuable. Everyone, from the eastern Oregon rancher, to the McDonald's worker who dropped out of high school to the Egyptian corporate salesman, has something of value to offer. When a person walks into my office s/he can be confident that I will respect and value them. I will approach them with an open mind and do my best to understand who they are and what their circumstances are.
I chose criminal law because I believe that a person charged with a crime needs and deserves the best possible support and protection they can get, and because I love the courtroom.
I chose small business law because I enjoy getting to work with people who take an idea and turn it into reality through creativity, dedication and hard work.
I like best that I get to work closely with people on matters that are very important to them.
As a solo practitioner all of my clients deal directly with me.
I work diligently and effectively to be fully prepared for every case. My clients find me friendly and approachable but also willing to be as aggressive as necessary to represent and protect them. Solid relationships are the base of my ability to do well by my clients. I work hard to maintain positive relationships both with my clients and within the local community.
I love to climb mountains and rocks, and go white-water rafting. I also love reading, primarily novels and biographies, gardening, cooking and eating! Of course, if I get to be with my husband, family or good friends then I am happy doing just about anything.
