Firm Focus and History

Andresen & Associates P.C., is a Chicago-based law firm that focuses its offerings in the areas of sports law, entertainment and the arts, intellectual property and a wide array of legal and non-legal services and consultation to business and corporate clients ranging from small entrepreneurs to multimillion dollar corporations.

Founded in 2005, Andresen & Associates, P.C. believes that its clients should feel welcome, cared for, and know that the firm is dedicated to meeting their individual needs. The success of the firm shall be measured by the success and satisfaction of its clients. Andresen & Associates shall always strive to make lasting relationships with its clients and its community by being guided by the following five principles:

1. Clients are never over-charged or over-billed. Clients deserve the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they are receiving quality legal service at a fair price. Efforts will always be taken to minimize fees and expenses whenever possible;

2. Customer service is paramount. As clients deserve personal and timely attention, communications are returned promptly. When our clients need us, we must be there for them;

3. Attorneys are counselors as well as advocates. As such, clients are always communicated with in clear language that they understand so that they know and understand what we do, why we do it, and how it affects them;

4. Our clients are the reason we exist, and within the bounds of professional ethics, we will tirelessly pursue their interests; and

5. Those engaged in the legal profession have an obligation to help those unable to help themselves and to make their community a better place. As such, it shall be a goal of the firm to partake in pro bono representation and volunteer activities whenever possible.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe that clients should educate themselves on legal issues that are relevant to them whenever possible. To that end, and perhaps based in my teaching experience, I strive to educate my clients throughout the process of their representation. I have one client who jokes that he has the equivalency of a first year law school education based on working with me for almost five years--and he may be right.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I have found that it often takes me longer to review and fix client-prepared documents than it would have taken just to create the document myself--costing the client more money in the long run. I believe it is generally better to let people do what they are good at, and let someone else handle things outside of their area of expertise.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I believe that representing one's self in legal matters without the proper education and experience is like performing surgery on yourself--something to be avoided at all costs. In fact, I personally hire other attorneys when I have legal needs outside of my areas of expertise. To that end, I am completely unwilling to coach clients who wish to represent themselves as I believe that this would put them at unnecessary risk and would be a violation of my ethical obligations to them. I would rather work with the client on fees so that they can secure the services that they need.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

The intellectual creativity and advanced education involved in becoming a lawyer and practicing law was very appealing to me. Further, I really liked the abundance of career choices that were available to persons with law degrees/licenses.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

People think I am joking, but being a bartender in college and law school was the best "class" I ever took to prepare me for being an attorney. I thoroughly believe that my ability to interact and connect with my clients on a personal level is one of the best offerings that I can provide them, and it was my real world education in interacting with people of all ages, races and levels of income during my 9+ years as a bartender that has enabled me to do this.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Upon making my decision to become an attorney, I was advised that I should pick a practice area that I was passionate about since I was going to be doing it 60 to 80 hours a week. The one thing that I was always passionate about was sports, and my decision basically made itself. Subsequently, I have developed a real passion for creating something from nothing (e.g., starting/launching a new business or a product) and working with creative people (e.g., writers, filmmakers, etc).

What do you like best about your career?

I really like the fact that I have no idea what is going to cross my desk on a daily basis. The variety that I experience in my day-to-day practice makes my job consistently thrilling. I also really like working with people to achieve their personal and professional goals. I am extremely lucky that the areas of law in which I practice are generally more "positive" than other areas of law and that I get to work with clients who are passionate about what they do.

Tell us about your law firm:

Unlike many larger firms, my clients are not passed off to paralegals or young associates--only to still be billed by a senior partner who oversees their work. My name is on the door and every one of my clients gets me as their attorney. Though I believe that most attorneys strive to do a good job for their clients, the fact that it is my business and my reputation on the line every time a client matter is handled makes me ever-diligent about the services that are provided.

What are your strengths and style?

I believe that my greatest strength is the passion with which I approach my job. It is never "just business" to me. For good or bad, I take each one of my client's matters very personally and strive to get them the absolute best result in all instances. Further, I believe that the personal interaction that I have with my clients (many of whom become personal friends) is unique in the legal profession.

Personal Interests:

When I do have some down time, I tend to lean towards relaxing endeavors: fishing, golf, travel and attending sporting events.

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
