Case 1 - Slip and fall resulting in severe back injury to plaintiff. Plaintiff was walking on a sidewalk outside a bakery. The defendant, Bakery, would wash their bakery wares with a hose on the sidewalk outside the bakery. Plaintiff slipped and fell on the greasy, floury residue left from bakery employees' washing efforts. Bakery claimed the slippery substance that Plaintiff slipped on resulted from morning dew and residual dust and dirt from outside the bakery. After witness testimony and presentation of evidence, the trial court awarded judgment in favor of Plaintiff.
I served as Chief Trial Counsel for Plaintiff.
Case 2 - Buyer purchased a vacant lot with intentions to build her dream home. The lot came with representations from Seller that all utility easements were in place to allow Buyer to develop the property and build her home. Upon construction, the neighboring adjacent property owner, Neighbor, notified Buyer that an easement did not exist for the sewer line that would need to cross Neighbor's property. Neighbor sought compensation from Buyer for the use of an easement across his property from Buyer.
I negotiated settlement between Buyer, Seller and Neighbor that allowed Buyer to obtain the necessary sewer easement and legal fees without expense to Buyer.

The firm focuses on a wide range of practice areas including personal injury, property disputes, environmental contamination, criminal defense, and business entity formation and transactions.
I previously worked for a law firm which took on cases including environmental contamination of soil and ground water, residential mold litigation, personal injury, and collections. In 2005, upon gaining much experience with the firm in various areas of practice, I determined it was time to form my own firm, The Law Office of Michael T. Lyons. Since this time, my firm has been involved in a wide range of cases including personal injury involving auto accidents, premises liability and slip and falls; property rights including easements, lot line disputes, non-disclosure issues, landlord-tenant, and unlawful detainer actions; environmental contamination of soil and ground water; collections on unpaid debts; and business entity formation and transactions; criminal law including DUI, misdemeanor driving and traffic violations; and intellectual property rights including copyright and trademark registration.
Prior to becoming an attorney, I owned and operated my own business which conducted environmental clean-up and remediation of soil and ground water on contaminated property throughout Southern and Central California. Upon admission to the Bar, I worked for an environmental law firm which primarily focused on cases that involved liability for contamination of public and private property.

The more educated the client is in the legal issues surrounding their own matters, the easier it is for them to understand the difficulties or potential roadblocks to a successful outcome of their case. Often, uneducated clients are certain they have a good case only to learn that the legal issues are far more complex and challenging than they could have ever imagined. Clients that educate themselves often have more understanding and appreciation for the work that the lawyer must undertake in order for a successful outcome of their case.
I am readily willing to review documents prepared by clients.
I am willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves, especially in the small claims arena.
I wanted to a career that would consistently present me with new challenges and allow me to grow my own business or practice on my own time and dime. Being a lawyer allows me to help others solve their life problems, similarly as a medical doctor helps persons to solve physical problems. I enjoy using the legal framework as a tool to help others come to just conclusions in whatever particular situation they present me.
As a college and law student, I worked full time to pay my tuition and living expenses. This made me well-versed in juggling school, work and life. In becoming a lawyer, it is often the case that many cases and issues need to be handled simultaneously. My prior school and work experience has helped me to be experienced in the coordination and planning of my busy legal schedule.
It may be better said that my primary area of practice choose me. Upon becoming a lawyer, clients were often referred to me by friends and work associates. Most typically, the cases involved personal injuries. Additionally, clients have been referred to me that involve a wide range of practice areas including property rights and business issues.
I enjoy the reward of a successful outcome of a case where the client is pleased with the results and the work I have done for them.
I am a solo practitioner, so I deal directly with clients. On certain cases, I work with other lawyers that may have expertise in a particular area of law.
I like to think that I keep an open line of communication with my clients. I keep clients apprised of the status of their case and am there for them when needed. As a lawyer, I feel preparation is key. The work done during a trial is often the tip of the iceberg. It is the work that goes into preparing for trial, court appearances, mediations, etc., which often reflect the outcome of the case. My personal style reflects good client communication and preparation.
I am an avid year-round outdoorsman. I enjoy golfing, biking, surfing, skiing and snowboarding. I also own a boat and enjoy fishing and pleasure boating on the ocean and in lakes.
