Employment & Labor Relations
I prefer to work with employees who have been seriously wronged by their employers by discrimination, harassment, or failure to pay wages and overtime pay, e.g. misclassification - workers falsely told they are exempt and not entitled to overtime pay. I represent individuals and groups of employees who have been wronged.

I have litigated and tried sexual harassment, discrimination and wage cases since 1985. I have my own firm and only represent employees. I was the trial and appellate counsel in the landmark California Supreme Court case of Cortez v. Purolator Products Air Filtration Company which enforced the right of workers to recover illegally withheld overtime wages, penalties and interest.
I believe in and enforce individual and group worker rights to deter discrimination, harassment and to correct the failure to legally pay employees.
I was a Reginald Heber Smith Fellow with the Navajo Legal Services Program for two years. I practiced criminal law from 1969-1985. I taught Remedies, including employment law from 1978-1985 at New College of California law school. Since 1985, I have represented workers in wage, harassment and discrimination claims with excellent results in settlements and trials.
I only take cases I believe in. I enjoy getting to know my clients, understanding the issues and achieving life changing results for them. I coach folks on unemployment claims and labor commission wage claims.
It is crucial for clients to understand the legal issues for their disposition and trial testimony and to appreciate how the pieces of the "legal puzzle" fit together.
Of course, I am happy to review documents.
I coach clients in unemployment and small wage claims.
I went to law school after military service to help folks, and that is what I have done for 39 years.
I have broad legal and life experience, and have studied and taught the Enneagram, breath work and meditation; which has given me insight into the social dynamics of the workplace.
Employer greed and harassment can lead to workplace abuse of employees.
I enjoy working with and helping people. I like problem solving and the intellectual challenge of employment law and litigation.
I enjoy interacting with clients and winning in court.
The people who work with me are also committed to helping people with their employment claims. I co-counsel with Newman Strawbridge on cases that require more than one lawyer.
I care about my clients and provide them emotional support and excellent legal skills to recover just compensation for employer wrong doing.
I learn the facts thoroughly. I only accept cases in which I believe that the client has been seriously wronged. I "bulldog" the case through litigation to settlement or a court or jury award.
I live outside Sebastopol, California, and tend a large organic garden. I have taken many bicycle trips to France, Denmark, Sweden, Maine and the San Juan Islands. I paint oil and acrylic on canvas, have had several shows and sold work. I write and study poetry, and have published. My last demonstration was a march on May 1, 2006, in support of immigrant rights.
