Continuing Education

I attend continuing legal education seminars on a variety of litigation and business topics to stay abreast of current movements in the law that may affect my clients.

Example Cases

In the last year, I have represented two small businesses in civil action. One was being sued by a large out of state manufacturer over items purchased fraudulently in his name. We successfully negotiated a dismissal of the action in a cost-effective and timely fashion.

We have also represented a local subcontractor who had been seeking payment from a general contractor for several months. After filing a lien and initiating a lawsuit, the general contractor is now making good on their debt.

Firm Focus and History

Page Law Office is a boutique law practice focusing on litigation and business counsel. We take great pride in being counselors and advocates for small and medium-sized businesses through a host of legal issues, including incorporation and choice of entity, liability defense, employment law, contract disputes and enforcement, debt collection, and other litigation services.

We also devote a significant part of our practice to trial work in both civil and criminal court. Whether your need is to prosecute or defend a civil action, or simply defend a criminal or traffic matter, we have the knowledge and expertise necessary to bring your case to a just resolution through negotiation and trial.

After practicing as Assistant District Attorney for Lee County from 2000 to 2004 and as an associate with a large Raleigh firm from 2004 to 2007, I returned to Sanford armed with a breadth of knowledge in many areas of law and opened Page Law Office to serve Lee County and the greater Sandhills and Central Carolina area.

Previous Employment Summary

As an Assistant District Attorney, I was responsible at various times for the prosecution of cases ranging from traffic offenses to murder, and for the majority of his time with District Attorney, was the office's primary financial and property crime prosecutor. I tried hundreds of cases during my tenure with the Lee County District Attorney's Office.

As an Associate with Yates, McLamb & Weyher in Raleigh, I focused my practice in the defense of complex medical malpractice cases and general civil matters. The vast majority of these cases involved claims for hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars, and required intimate understanding of specialized areas of law and complicated medical subject matter. My work took me to all areas of North Carolina.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

There are many cases in which it is not cost-effective for a prospective client to pay for our time to resolve a matter. I realize that it makes no sense to pay an attorney $500 to recover a $300 debt. We can often give valuable counsel in how to proceed in such matters. The first 30 minutes of any consultation is free. Our hope is simply that our advice is helpful and that the client will tell others about us and return to us in the future.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

We will happily review documents prepared by clients. This can be an efficient way to limit the expense of legal counsel. Of course, all clients can expect to receive candid and honest advice from us about their documents and their specific needs. If in our opinion the client-prepared document will not meet the client's needs, we will say so.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

This issue comes up a lot in small claims matters. We will gladly coach anyone wishing to represent themselves in a negotiation or in court. During the course of our clinic, you can expect advice on courtroom etiquette, evidence, objections, motions, arguments, and even advice and expertise about local court customs and personnel. Our goal is to have you leave the office confident in your preparations and ready to do battle.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

My father is an attorney. At an early age, it became apparent that I shared his gift for speaking and thoughtful argument. Law school became a foregone conclusion and I embarked upon this career without a backward glance. Since being admitted to practice of law, I have practiced in a number of different capacities, but always with the same goals: to see that justice was done, to pursue the truth, and to serve others.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Because each case brings new and unique circumstances to bear on the application of the law, it is important that an attorney have a well-rounded and diverse background of education and experience to draw upon. My background includes graduation from a top 5 business school, service as an Assistant District Attorney, and significant work in complex areas of civil litigation. These varied experiences give me a broad base of knowledge from which to counsel my clients.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I love being in court. I like interacting with opposing counsel and arguing to judges and juries. Most of all, I love helping clients achieve their dreams (like starting up a business) or overcome their nightmares (like a criminal matter or contract dispute). I enjoy helping the entrepreneurs and local businesses that are the lifeblood of our community and the embodiment of the American Dream toward success.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy helping others and feeling like I am serving God's purpose for my life. I love the challenge of constructing a logical and persuasive argument and a compelling case theme. Finally, I enjoy the daily interaction with the local attorneys, business people, court staff and the general public and the camaraderie of living and working in Lee County.

Tell us about your law firm:

After practicing for over a year as a solo practitioner, I brought on Kris Hilscher, a talented young associate attorney, who has enabled me to better serve all of my clients and ensure the high level of personal service and attorney interaction my clients have come to expect.

What are your strengths and style?

Whoever said you catch more flies with honey was right. I have known "pit-bull" attorneys in my career who spent their days looking for a fight. And for some of their clients, it may have been satisfying to hear all of the boisterous objections and vigorous argument, but many of these battles ended badly for their clients. I think there are certain attorneys whose clients get a raw deal because the attorney on the other side doesn't want to give their lawyer the satisfaction of a good deal.

I do my very best to treat the court, counsel and courthouse personnel with respect and to foster friendship with those same folks. A lot of that is because it is how I was raised and because I think it is the right way to live and work, but those are not the only reasons.

I maintain a professional and friendly demeanor and develop good relationships with opposing attorneys because I believe it helps the vast majority of my clients in the long run. It is common knowledge that the vast majority of lawsuits are settled and the vast majority of criminal prosecutions result in a plea bargain. It's better to have a smooth and professional negotiator in your corner than a bombastic blowhard.

I am a family man, a member of Brickcity Community Church, a supporter of Sanford business and a supporter of Easter Seals - UCP of North Carolina.
