Firm Focus and History

Olea LLP offers online clients many legal services including: estate planning, wills and trusts, small business set-up, contract and document review, legal research and family law services including: parenting plans, separation agreements, divorces and name changes. Olea LLP is not a 'forms' website. We are licensed attorneys who practice law through our secure online law office. All inquires made through this website will be answered personally by Olea lawyers, and all legal services will be performed by licensed Washington State attorneys. Quality and confidentiality will never be compromised.

Olea LLP was established at the beginning of 2009. We are one of the first virtual law practices in the country and the first firm in Washington State to practice exclusively online. Charlene and I are the two lawyers in this firm and our goals for our practice are similar although our talents and skills vary in many complimenting ways.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to law school I earned a degree in Philosophy and worked as an English as second language teacher in both Canada and abroad in Italy. During law school I summered at Bremer and Whyte, a civil litigation firm in Southern California where I worked in the areas of construction defect and insurance. From August 2006 to December 2006 I interned at Ritz & Clark, a Wall Street firm specializing in employment law. I have been involved in volunteer work at many different places including: The Toronto Rape Crisis Center, the Sierra Leone Project and the Domestic Violence Coalition.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Olea LLP was founded with the purpose of not only providing affordable and accessible legal services but also with the aim to educating non-lawyers about legal issues that affect them. We encourage our clients and blawg readers to empower themselves by becoming their own advocates. One particular aspect of our firm that we are very proud of is that once we complete a client's specific legal service, for example, a non-contested divorce, it is then up to the client to file the respective documents with the appropriate entity. Of course we provide our clients with detailed instructions and are always available to aid them in filing but ultimately, the client is the one that concludes the legal transaction. This not only saves clients money but involves them in a process that is overwhelmingly shrouded in secrecy.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

At Olea LLP we are open to reviewing client prepared documents. However, since we did not draft the documents ourselves, the extent of our services in this area only include ensuring that any forms or documents are filled out correctly. With respect to wills and trusts, our intake forms for clients requesting these services are very extensive and without this information in front of us it would be very difficult to review a self-made will or trust.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Providing limited representation is something we would consider although we can only make that assessment after a review of a case and on a case by case basis.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became a lawyer to effect positive change in people's lives. I saw the law as providing an opportunity to help individuals, groups of people and populations at large. I have a keen interest in human rights law and in particular eradicating forms of discrimination. Olea LLP was created with these goals in mind.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My lawyering skills have benefited greatly from my experience as a teacher of English as a second language and from traveling and living in various parts of the world. Teaching and traveling has taught me to be patient, compassionate and inquisitive. These qualities not only make me a better lawyer but a better person.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Our online model really dictates the type of law we are able to practice. In the lawyering world, services usually fall into two categories: transactional and litigation. Since we serve our clients via the web, any case that requires court appearances, and/or litigation is not a possibility. With that said, I have a keen interest in estate planning and employment law and am very proud that Olea LLP successfully uses the web as a platform to make these legal services available to all Washington residents.

What do you like best about your career?

I became a lawyer with the goal of helping people. With our unique practice we are able to offer high quality legal services to all individuals across Washington State. Moreover, because of the flexibility of the VLO, we are able to serve a diverse population of clients.

Tell us about your law firm:

Olea LLP is comprised of two attorneys, myself and Katy Sheehan. We are co-founders of Olea and very close friends. Typically, either Katy or myself will be the contact person with a client but it's not unusual for Katy and I to work together. When a client contacts us at Olea LLP they can expect to have all their questions answered by either Katy or myself. We do not employ legal assistants and we undertake all the legal work ourselves including document review and legal research.

What are your strengths and style?

I am a highly organized individual with a passion for what I do. I enjoy working with people and take great pride in helping individuals feel empowered by involving them in the legal process. I am a creative person and enjoy brainstorming with both fellow attorneys and clients to discover the best solution and most cost-effective solution available. I would consider my style to be thorough and thoughtful.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy reading, travelling, kayaking and taking long motorcycle trips with my partner. Recently, I travelled the east coast of Canada and motorcycled from London to Paris. A perfect day off for me includes a long brunch with a magazine, a trip to the market and a few hours in the afternoon sun with a good book and a latte!

I speak passable French and a little Italian and Katy Sheehan speaks passable Spanish.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

At Olea we like to give our clients peace of mind by providing a quote for services before we undertake the work. Legal services are often not obtained by individuals for fear that it will cost too much. Although at times fees may vary depending on the complexity of the legal service requested, we are very flexible and will work with a client to create a payment plan that works for them.

Hourly Rates

$150.

Free Initial Consultation?

Yes, a client is free to register on our website and contact an attorney with a question for services. This communication or initial contact does not create an attorney client relationship however. Only once an attorney has performed a conflict check, has agreed to take the case, and the client has been provided a quote for services and has accepted the terms of service, will a relationship be formed.

Typical Retainer

No.

Nolo's Licensing Check
