Firm Focus and History

The firm focuses on personal injuries arising from automobile accidents, product liability, wrongful death, premises liability, etc. The firm also handles cases involving industrial injuries and workers' compensation. The firm has emphasized a robust litigation practice based on a comprehensive study of trial law and the masters of the courtroom.

The firm was established in 1984 to primarily handle personal injury. Its main attorney, Bruce J. Levitz has handled hundreds of personal injury cases over the years and litigated a countless cases, some involving substantial recoveries.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to opening Levitz Legal Group, Mr. Levitz worked as an associate in the James Duryea Firm in San Francisco which handled plaintiff and defense work involving tortious injuries and insurance law.

Activities and Awards

Bruce J. Levitz worked as a law clerk in the S.F. Superior Court for then Presiding Judge the Honorable Donald B. Constine.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe the law is very complicated and usually requires professional advice. The old adage from Abraham Lincoln that recommends people not to represent themselves, even in this day and age, seems good advice. Having someone who is detached and not a party to represent you will give you a better chance of prevailing. When you represent yourself, and if you do not do well, there is no one to fall back on but yourself. An attorney can sometimes be a great buffer between the client and the trier of fact. He can explain or lessen the impact of an otherwise poor client presentation. A person who represents himself cannot accomplish that.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

If the client is willing to pay for my time I'm willing to review any document.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I think the only time this makes sense is when the matter will not allow or permit legal representation. For instance, in the small claims court or involving claims which no attorney will accept or the client is unable to retain an attorney.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I have always advocated for people beginning in high school when I was Student Council President and editor of the Lakeview High School newspaper. Being a high achiever and exceptional athlete gave me further impetus to represent people less fortunate. I realized I had a natural talent for trial law which exhibited itself in law school and proved itself in reality after so many successful litigation experiences. I think my early models were Melvin Belli, Herb Haif, and the late Robert Cartwright Sr. who answered for me many of the mysteries of the courtroom.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Being a people person and growing up in Chicago, having many friends, talking to people from all walks of life, having an open mind and an empathetic personality, having a certain vitality and cheerfulness and a reverence for life, with strong intuition and quickness of mind, are to me ideal qualifications for a successful trial lawyer.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

It just seemed natural and fitting.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy being able to thoroughly review and understand a case and then present it in an intelligent and creative fashion to obtain fair redress for my clients.

Tell us about your law firm:

In the past I had seven people working for me consisting of lawyers, secretaries and paralegals. Five years ago I went on sabbatical to learn everything about commercial real estate investing and analysis. After that hiatus, I am now operating my firm as a solo practitioner which enables me to give 100% attention to every case. I do not currently require the extensive staffing I once had especially since I use the latest legal technologies including voice dictation.

What are your strengths and style?

My strengths are being able to focus on case details, listen to my clients thoroughly, analyze the case in light of existing law and bring to bear sensible recommendations. If the case requires litigation, I bring to the table extensive litigation experience with a natural ability in the courtroom.

Personal Interests:

My personal interests are quite diverse: at one point I was studying judo for the Olympics and have an extensive martial arts background for most of my life in many disciplines. I have been a constant athlete exercising through weightlifting, long bicycle rides, hiking, skiing and enjoying the great outdoors. I enjoy gardening and cooking and generally things healthy. I have an interest in the Far East and Asian languages. I am an extensive reader and perhaps my greatest passion recently is real estate investing and analysis.
