Firm Focus and History

I strive to provide my clients with effective solutions to every legal challenge their businesses may face. Sometimes that solution requires creative thinking, as with formation of new types of businesses and sometimes patient persistence, as with resolving disputes. Sometimes that solution requires that I assist my client to find an attorney with a more narrowly focused practice, as with intellectual property issues. Always, the solution requires listening as a first step.

My firm opened its doors on December 1, 2006 at its present location.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to becoming an attorney, I successfully operated my own small business, an international freight forwarder, for over twelve years. I have personally experienced many of the legal challenges that my clients face, and I understand their concerns, both legal and financial.

Activities and Awards

Every year, I participate as a pro bono attorney in the Immigrant Families Advocacy Project at the University of Washington School of Law. I also provide seminars for small business owners to enable them to avoid legal problems in the first place, engage in self-help when appropriate, and to know when it is time to call an attorney.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients, especially small business clients, need to be legally educated for the same reasons that they need to be educated about their personal health. First, there is much that they can do to make sure legal problems to not arise in the first place. Second, some legal problems can be resolved without recourse to attorneys. Finally, clients must be able to recognize when it is time to call in a professional so that they can do so before it is too late.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

This depends upon what is going to get my client the best result at a reasonable price. Some types of documents lend themselves to review and correction by an attorney. Often, however, it is actually more expensive to fix a document a client has prepared than it is to prepare one "from scratch."

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

For business clients, I am happy to provide coaching and guidance while clients attempt to work out problems privately. However, once a suit has been filed and a matter has become the subject of formal litigation, I strongly recommend against self representation in this area of law.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

Like most of my small business clients, I enjoy working independently for myself. I also enjoy the satisfaction that comes from knowing that the work that I am doing will make a difference to my clients. Finally, as a small business owner, I enjoyed finding creative legal solutions to business problems, and decided to put myself in a position to do that for others.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I've faced many of the problems my clients face, having been a small business owner myself, and so I understand these problems at many levels, not just as legal puzzles.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I practice both small business and family law. I chose to develop a small business practice because I understand from personal experience that a small business owner wants an attorney to find the best way for the entrepreneur to reach his goals, not tell him or her what those goals should be.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy being able to do work that is challenging, engaging, and, I hope, makes someone else's life a little better. I also enjoy working for myself.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, so I deal with all of my clients personally and look after every aspect of their legal matters.

What are your strengths and style?

I tend to remain calm and in control even when those around me become emotional, irrational, or belligerent. This means I do not become unnecessarily swept away when the opposing side is acting unreasonably, but continue calmly to press for what is in my client's best interests. This also means that when the opposing side is also acting rationally, a resolution can often be reached more quickly and inexpensively.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy participating in Toastmasters and Mensa. I am an avid reader, and I spend much more time than I should playing in the kitchen.

Office Manager/Assistant

I handle everything personally.

Yes

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

For transactional matters, following an initial consultation, I often can provide a flat rate for a particular service, such as forming a corporation or drafting a contract.

Hourly Rates

$200.

Free Initial Consultation?

I do not charge for the initial consultation. The initial consultation lasts for as long as it takes me to get a clear understanding of my client's legal needs, decide whether I am the right attorney for that client, and provide that client with the information he or she needs to decide whether to retain me. Generally, this takes under thirty minutes, but can take longer.

Typical Retainer

I limit my retainer to the amount I think will be necessary to resolve the matter. My retainers, therefore, can be almost any amount. Clients may also use credit cards instead of retainers.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
