Firm Focus and History

The firm focuses on helping clients achieve their individual goals, whether it be in planning administration or in litigation. One half of the practice concerns guardianship. We assist clients to avoid guardianship by proper planning. Where they have not made their plans in advance and can no longer handle their own affairs, we assist family members and others, many of whom reside out of state, to obtain guardianship over their loved ones in order to protect them and their assets. We handle both contested and non-contested guardianships. In connection with our representation of the guardian, we assist in developing care plans and financial management, to ensure that the incapacitated person and their dependents are taken care of financially and in a manner to which they have become accustomed. The other half of the practice concerns planning and administration of estates and, where necessary, estate litigation to protect the interests of beneficiaries and other affected persons.

The firm was established in 1991. Many of our clients are referred to us by other attorneys. We now handle planning, administration and litigation exclusively in the areas of trusts, wills, estates, guardianships and incapacity matters. For the first 20 years of my practice, I also practiced family law. Although I no longer handle contested family law cases, we routinely prepare prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. I feel family law was a perfect precursor to my present practice mix because they both involve family dynamics and a complicated legal process, which can have profound consequences in an individual's life. My professional background gives me a sensitivity to the human issues which arise when a loved one has become ill or died. My continued estate and guardianship litigation practice keeps me current in recognizing potential problems and helping clients plan to avoid them.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to opening my own firm, I clerked and then worked for the first five years in general practice and personal injury in Palm Beach County, Florida. When I initially opened my firm in 1991, it was a general practice. In 1995, I limited the practice to Family law, Probate and Guardianship matters. In 2008, I further limited the practice to only estate, probate, and guardianship matters. Over the years, I have expanded the guardianship and estate planning areas to include special needs and supplemental needs trust planning and wealth succession planning. My undergraduate background in accounting has also assisted me well in these areas to help clients achieve their goals.

Activities and Awards

1994 Legal Aid Award; 2002 Legal Aid Award; 1999 Center for Missing and Exploited Children Award of Merit; 2004 Center for Missing and Exploited Children Award of Merit; 2007 Center for Missing and Exploited Children Award of Merit; 2000 Jewish Family & Children's Service Award for Elder Advocacy. Service as an officer and member of Inns of Court and membership on numerous committees of the Florida Bar and Palm Beach County Bar Association. In addition, I have served on the Board of Directors of the Alpert Jewish Family and Children Service of Palm Beach County, Florida.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients need to make informed decisions; anything which makes them more informed is beneficial. We can always help to clear up misconceptions and help to put the client's newly gained knowledge in perspective with other legal issues which the client may not have considered.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

It is important to review anything a client took the time to write. If it is important to the client, it should be important to me, so I can help them to achieve their goals.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Often, it is best if the attorney remain in the background, especially where the mere fact that one party retains an attorney can escalate a dispute.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I like helping people achieve their goals.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I clerked for several years and then was an Associate in a large firm. That taught me basic skills and teamwork. Working as a waiter through school taught me the value of hard work and humility. Service to the mental health and social service community has taught me the rewards in helping those to whom society has generally turned a blind eye. The practice of family law for 20 years taught me how to help people with their legal needs, while they are experiencing extreme emotional distress. It helped me learn how to keep clients focused on meeting their real goals, without being sidetracked by emotionally trying situations.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I chose this area because it is a creative process of helping people meet their goals and take care of the persons whom they love.

What do you like best about your career?

I like giving my clients peace of mind.

Tell us about your law firm:

My office manager handles all of our fiduciary accountings for the client. He is a real "people person" and assists clients with many of their needs in estate administration, and owing to his former career as a realtor, he can also assist as they sell and manage property for the estate. My legal assistant is kind and thoughtful and can oftentimes assist clients directly with their immediate needs. They have been working with me for over 10 years.

What are your strengths and style?

My strength is my patience and commitment to helping clients develop and meet their planning goals.

Personal Interests:

Landscape and wildlife painting, farming, physics, natural sciences and anthropology, and history.
