We focus on representing citizens who have been accused of committing crimes. This can be the most stressful period of their lives, and they need an attorney who will fight for them, and give them straight answers.
I started my firm in 1990, in Reno, and then went into partnership with John Ohlson, Esq., until 2003. I have been at this location, again in solo practice, since then.
I worked for a firm at Lake Tahoe from 1985 to 1990, doing general civil trial practice, personal injury work, and civil defense. Prior to that, I was a law clerk in Douglas County, Nevada, for a year.
AV- rated by Martindale-Hubbell; Death Penalty trial qualified; Lecturer in criminal law, domestic law, and ethics; and Judge Pro Tem for Reno Municipal Court.
Educating yourself is always a great place to start. However, in criminal cases, knowledge of the prosecutor and the judge is critical, and has to be used in conjunction with the "letter of the law."
Not really applicable to this area.
Not in the criminal area. I think it is a mistake even for a lawyer to represent themselves on a criminal matter. You need the objectivity that another person brings to it.
People say that lawyers "think backwards," that is, we work from a desired conclusion backwards to get the facts we need to support that result. I did that well, and enjoy a certain facility with reading and writing English. A love of history and logical reasoning lead me to study law.
It is the accumulation of all the experiences over time. I've been doing this for 25 years, and every time I think I've seen it all, I've been wrong.
My former partner asked me to help him with a murder case shortly after we started working together. I was hooked from there. No other area gets right to the heart of what makes people tick as well as criminal practice. It's exciting, it's interesting, and you get to go to court.
I'm typically in court three days a week. Being on my feet, asking questions, arguing with a prosecutor or judge is as good as it gets.
My office consists of me and my assistant. Everyone deals with me, and when I'm not available, you are dealing with a person intimately aware of your case.
We're not afraid to go to court.
I am a competitive fencer and occasional fisherman.

No, it depends on the nature of the case, and the type of work involved.
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
