The firm was established in 1983 under the name Schmeiser and Morelle. Shortly thereafter, Charlie Watts joined the firm and we practiced as Schmeiser, Morelle and Watts until 1994. Arlen L. Olsen, a former USPTO Examiner, became a partner and the firm name changed to Schmeiser, Olsen and Watts in 1994. Over the years, the firm has continued to grow, establishing offices in Arizona in 1994 with additional attorneys currently in Washington, D.C. and Taiwan. We currently have 15 attorneys, 4 patent agents, and 10 legal assistants.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

It is very beneficial for clients to be well educated in intellectual property law so that they can understand the steps being taken to protect their rights.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Where a person is sufficiently trained in intellectual property to adequately draft documents that require limited attorney input, we are willing to meet with those clients.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Our experience has been that the technical complexities of intellectual property law prevent a client from self-representation, even with attorney coaching.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

My father was an attorney and I admired the way people came to him for advice and assistance. I was often impressed by the service he was able to perform for his clients. I felt that I would enjoy using my talents and abilities to help others succeed.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My educational background in physics, chemistry, and biology prepared me well for dealing with diverse technologies and protecting clients' rights. Over the past 30 years I have built the firm with attorneys and agents with diverse technical experience, many with advanced technical degrees, and have developed a firm philosophy where providing excellent service to our clientele is of primary importance.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

It enabled me to combine my technical expertise with my legal training and deal with matters that are always new and interesting. I have an affinity for people who use their creative talents to develop advancements and also those who have an entrepreneurial spirit.

What do you like best about your career?

I like dealing with clients and helping them to succeed. When their dreams and aspirations are met, I have a deep sense of satisfaction.

Tell us about your law firm:

While my background is in pure science (biology, physics and chemistry), I am supported by a highly respected and well experienced team of attorneys and patent agents. Our technical skills include biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, mechanical engineering, biomedical devices, Internet and E-commerce law, electrical engineering, software development, clean energy, nanotechnology, chemistry and materials processing and semiconductor fabrication, We have a number of Ph.D.s and former Patent Examiners on staff.

We have a dedicated and knowledgeable support staff, including six paralegals, some of whom have been with the firm for more than a decade and are well versed in IP matters. Our firm has an excellent work environment. Our people are friendly and outgoing. Our clients realize they are working with a positive and supportive team.

What are your strengths and style?

My greatest strength is my ability to listen to people and hear what they mean to say. Once a rapport is developed, I am able to use my strategic and analytic skills to assist clients in determining real needs and guide them in making decisions that will help them be successful. Additionally, I have a keen ability to see the innovation in an invention and to identify what aspects of the creative process meet the criteria for protection with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Personal Interests:

My primary interests revolve around service to others. Whether in my personal life, my work, or in any one of the roles I hold in society at large, I am most interested in doing well and helping others to attain success.
