Business Law
I value the opportunity to work with and serve clients who are sincerely interested in the legal issue that brings them to my office. A sincere interest means the client will be fully engaged throughout the course of representation and will work with me in the pursuit of a fair and just result. I also value the opportunity to work with small business owners who may wish to establish a long-term professional relationship and with individuals who have experienced injury or financial loss as the result of any number of civil wrongs.

I take several continuing education courses each year in order to maintain active law licenses in Florida, Kansas, and New Mexico. Each state has different continuing legal education requirements and requires that credit hours be obtained during different time frames. I participate in regularly scheduled educational teleconferences designed specifically for appellate lawyers. I have also lectured at several continuing legal education courses over the years.

Our firm is a litigation-oriented law firm serving the legal needs of small business owners and individuals. By associating with other trusted professionals, we strive to meet the legal needs of all clients who face legal issues and questions beyond litigation.
Mr. Dempsey founded the firm more than 30 years ago, after serving as Assistant U.S. Attorney for a number of years. The firm is currently comprised of three attorneys, including Mr. Dempsey.
I was previously a partner in the largest law firm in Kansas, Foulston Siefkin LLP. I relocated to Florida in 2003 in order to devote a portion of my career to the underserved area of juvenile law, specifically to represent abused and neglected children and youth. I was a visiting professor at the Barry University School of Law, and I created the appellate division of the Statewide Guardian ad Litem Office. I returned to the full-time private practice of law in 2008.
• The Florida Bar Appellate Court Rules Committee (2006-Present)
• Florida Bar Journal/News Editorial Board (2004-2006)
• Children’s Rights Litigation Committee, ABA Section of Litigation (2002–Present)
• Web Editor, Children’s Rights Litigation Committee (2005–2008)
• Outstanding Subcommittee Chair, Children’s Rights Litigation Committee (2006)
• Kansas Bar Association (1990–2007)
• Chair, Kansas Bar Association Annual Meeting Committee (2000–2001)
• President’s Award, Wichita Bar Association (1997)
In addition to these present and past professional activities, I volunteer my time on occasion to various civic organizations, and I continue to provide pro bono service on behalf of abused and neglected children and youth.
I believe that clients should educate themselves so that they have a good understanding of the issues and requirements involved in the particular issue confronting them. A client who lacks a basic understanding of the issues they face will have difficulty making wise and informed decisions.
It depends on the circumstances. I welcome inquiries from clients who wish to discuss the risks and benefits of drafting documents for themselves.
It depends on the circumstances of the particular client and particular matter. I welcome inquiries from clients who wish to discuss the risks and benefits of representing themselves.
I decided to attend law school during the summer of 1986, as the result of my internship with then-Congressman Charles W. Stenholm of Texas.
The process of learning and improving never ends. Every experience (good and bad) affects who we are and how we approach the next experience. I try to learn something from every client with whom I work and from every case on which I work.
I enjoy the challenges that accompany advocacy of a client?s position.
I enjoy learning and writing and meeting new people. Being a lawyer provides opportunities to meet people from different walks of life and to learn about subjects that I would never encounter through another profession.
The firm is fortunate to have a staff of experienced and friendly paralegals, several of whom have worked for the firm over a number of years. I tend to be a hands-on attorney, which means that the paralegals and I are in constant communication so that they know and understand what my strategic plan for a particular matter is and how I wish for them to handle particular situations.
My style is simple and direct. Open and direct communication eliminates miscommunication, thus fostering a healthy, trusting relationship between attorney and client. My strengths are my experience, my diligent work ethic, and my commitment to serve clients to the best of my ability.
I enjoy running and swimming, and spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy traveling to the mountains when time permits.

I have represented clients on a fixed-fee basis. The amount of the fixed-fee depends on the nature and complexity of the legal issue and legal services involved and varies from case to case. Fixed-fee billing arrangements are the result of specific discussions with the client and are confirmed in writing.
Hourly rates are competitive with attorneys of similar qualifications and experience. The amount of the hourly fee depends upon the nature, complexity, and urgency of the legal matter involved.
Consultations are generally free of charge unless the client desires to receive specific advice at the conclusion of the consultation. In the event a client desires legal advice specific to their particular circumstances, the consultation is typically billed on a fixed fee or hourly basis. The length of a free consultation depends upon the nature and complexity of the matter involved and rests in the discretion of the firm's attorneys.
The firm routinely charges advance fees and retainers for non-contingency fee cases. The amount of the advance fee or retainer varies according to the nature, complexity, and urgency of the matter involved. In contingency fee cases, clients must sign a written fee agreement in which they agree, among other things, to pay a modest amount specified in the agreement each month to offset the costs advanced by the firm.
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
