I wanted to go into a profession where I could help people who had problems. I also wanted a job that didn?t require me to get up too early. I had worked as a delivery truck driver for my family?s bakery when I was in my teens and had to get up at 3:00 a.m. Getting to an office by 8:00 a.m. seemed reasonable compared to that.
I?ve worked since I was 14 years old starting with factory jobs, truck driving and sales, so I got an early start on being responsible. I went to college in Washington D.C. and worked as an intern in Congress, and then for a legal services agency. When I first started practicing law I spent seven years as a Bankruptcy Trustee, and as my practice grew I began working with nonprofit agencies, helping them raise money.
My experiences have exposed me to a great variety of people. People facing challenges in their lives such as poor health, job losses and financial difficulties. All of it has combined to give me an understanding of how politics works, how people face the problems life throws at them, and the sense that as a person who has been fairly successful I have a responsibility to give something back to the community.
In the beginning it wasn?t really a choice. When I got out of college and joined a firm here in Buffalo, I was the new guy and was assigned the practice area no one else wanted. Then I was appointed Bankruptcy Trustee and I became very familiar with first the Bankruptcy Law, then the new Bankruptcy Code of 1979. I studied and lectured on it, the caseload began to increase, and I began to really enjoy the work. In 1980 I started my own firm with a focus on bankruptcy. It satisfied my desire to help people solve their problems in a relatively short period of time, for a reasonable fee that they could afford and would still allow me to make a living. Then, since I was already seeing people who had financial problems due to a serious illness or injury, the natural next step was to begin doing Social Security Disability and Personal Injury cases.
I?ve built a firm where the people who work for me are in agreement that the focus is to help improve the lives of our clients. So we are able to make a living doing something for which we?ve developed a high level of expertise and feel good about.
We have 15 lawyers and 35 support staff working as a team, with 13 offices throughout Western New York. As a rule, things run pretty smoothly and efficiently. Our team members have become recognized experts in their fields and regularly give lectures to other attorneys and paralegals about best practices in those fields. I?m proud of what we have been able to accomplish together.
I think I have a strong work ethic, expertise in our practice areas and an ability to teach the people who work with me how to get the best results in the optimum amount of time. My ability to analyze the legal issues presented has been a great asset. I take each case on an individual basis, treat my clients with respect, and strive for the best possible outcome. I?m able to help people who come to me sick with worry, remove the aggravation, and make life better for them.
I?ve been married 30 years and my wife and I have a great interest in helping nonprofit organizations. We?re active in the fundraising efforts of 15 organizations like AIDS Family Services, Inc., the Lupus Foundation, and the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.
We like to travel to remote areas like Guatemala, Tibet, China and Bangkok, which dovetails with another one of my interests?photography. I?ve taken photographs all over the world and have a web site for my photos at www.freedmanphotos.com.
To keep in shape I do Hatha Yoga three times a week and I also work out with a trainer. Barbara and I are also dedicated to being there for our parents and other family members when they need support and attention. Then we have our Silky Terrier, Gracie Freedman, who requires daily walks but pays us back with that unconditional love only a dog can give.
