Continuing Education

I am a regular participant in over 90% of the functions with the bankruptcy organizations that I belong to. I enjoy attending the conferences in order to keep in touch with the Judges and Trustees in this community and to keep up on the latest trends and cases. I feel that a strong continuing dedication to the craft of law is as important as a strong work ethic and responsibility to my clients.

Example Cases

One of my most memorable cases was actually a friend of mine. He was having some problems with the IRS. It was not a very large amount of debt, but with his job, he just could not seem to get caught-up on the payments and the interest and penalties just kept growing. It really made me feel good that he would come to me with his financial problems and put his trust in me that I would keep it confidential. It is a real pleasure being in the position to help people, and helping a friend is even more satisfying. You will be happy to know that he has received his discharge!

In another case I had a husband a wife who had an unusually high amount of credit card debt, and rather high income, which after they paid all of their necessary expenses, still left them with a lot of extra money at the end of the month. I initially put them in a plan that was a very low payment to their unsecured creditors, and they knew that we were "swinging for the fences," so to speak, and that we may not be able to get the lower payment. Well, as the case progressed and my debtors' continued to enjoy overtime at their jobs, their income continued to increase. They were so grateful that their creditor had stopped calling them and that they had their lives back, and phone too! That they agreed to increase their plan payment about ten times, which resulted in all of their creditors being paid in full, it made me proud and happy that there are people out there that wanted to take responsibility for their debt. Plan approved by the Court, case proceeding along smoothly.

Firm Focus and History

I have been handling consumer bankruptcy cases for almost seven years, and my firm has been around for nearly four and a half years.

My firm's focus is on consumer bankruptcy. 90% of my clientele are bankruptcy, either Chapter 7 or Chapter 13. My goal is to give highly professional, personalized service to each and every one of my clients, I am the attorney that you will talk to on the phone the very first time you call, and I will be the only attorney that you will meet, and work with. I do not hand my work off to paralegals or associates. I pride myself on a strong work ethic and hands on approach to my cases. I attend all court hearings and handle all aspects of your case.

Previous Employment Summary

I spent nearly two and a half years with two of the larger bankruptcy firms in the metro Detroit area. During that time, I gained a vast amount of knowledge and have handled, in one aspect or another, over 4,000 cases. Over the last four years I was a contract attorney, operating under my firm's name, where I was able to hone my skills dramatically with an emphasis on service and quality with a small boutique firm.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Essential. First of all, it really is not my case, it is theirs, and they need to be armed with the knowledge that they need to make an informed decision. I like it when clients ask me questions on a topic that they have thoroughly researched.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will review any document that a client prepared for him/herself. The reality of the matter is that you learn by doing and not just reading. Sometimes reading the law has nothing to do with the practical aspect and mechanics of the forms that actually need to be filled out, and if a client is willing to go that extra mile, but later feels a bit overwhelmed at the process, then it would be a slap in the face to just disregard the work and effort they put into those documents and cast them aside. I welcome this level of preparation.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

This is a complex question to answer. First, there are ethical issues an attorney has to both the client and the system, and operating in the "background" is unethical. I find that most people just need to find that right attorney that is willing to work with them and fits with their personality.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

My mother had always worked as a legal secretary when my sister and I were kids, and she loved it. She would always talk about her bosses and I guess it just grew on me. After undergraduate school, I worked some jobs with my business degree, but I was not happy. I was pondering law school for about four years before I applied. Then I just did it, and it was one of the best decisions I had ever made. I came from a blue collar family and I am one of the only professionals in the family. I was lucky to have a lot of encouragement from all of my friends and family, and without that I may have never made it. I truly value education and a law degree is one of the hardest degrees that you can obtain and I am proud of what I have achieved.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

What makes me a better lawyer is never quitting. Being raised by a single mother, I started working as soon as I could. By 15 I was working and have worked since ever since. Even in law school, I had to work to pay my rent. The school did not want us to work because of the demands, but I had to, and I still managed to remain on the Dean's List almost every term.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Sometimes your practice area chooses you. That is how it was for me. I had some wonderful mentors over the last seven years and had great experiences with all the attorneys in the bankruptcy community. I love bankruptcy because I was able to learn it correctly over the years in good law firms before I decided to go out on my own. I would never be in solo practice if I did not have the skills that I acquired early on in my career.

What do you like best about your career?

Being a lawyer is something special; it is one of the few true professions in the world. Helping people is very important, and being a lawyer gives me an advantage in doing so. The training in law school and the practice of law has given me skills like no other profession could.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner. I will handle every aspect of your case, personally, from the initial phone call to the end of the case.

What are your strengths and style?

Communication is essential, without it cases are destined to fail. I have a direct style. I do not like to play hide the ball. I am a real good listener and empathetic. I was born and raised in Detroit.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy my son, and I love watching him grow. I love sports and exercise.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

Yes and no. Chapter 13 bankruptcy, re-organization, are awarded on a flat fee basis in the Metro Detroit area. Those fees are paid over time and I very rarely require any attorney fees in advance of filing a Chapter 13. Court costs are typically all I need to start your case. Chapter 7 bankruptcy, liquidation, fees can vary dramatically bases on the complexity of the case. For example a small business liquidation, or a person who has multiple houses, have fees that tend to run much higher than a single mother, who lives in an apartment and has under $20,000 in debt. I will cut my fees for individuals on a fixed income so that they can have access to the relief that they need, without having to spend a fortune. If you mention that you found me on Nolo.com, I will give you a reduction in my fees!

Hourly Rates

My hourly rate is $225 as approved by most of Judges in the district.

Free Initial Consultation?

Absolutely!! There is never a consultation charge. No time limit. I can also handle a lot of the preparation over the phone or internet via e-mail for clients with time constraints.

Typical Retainer

In a Chapter 13, re-organization, if it is a single filer, it is $324. Those are costs that go to other parties such as the court clerk or the credit counselors. Chapter 7, liquidation, varies on the nature and situation of the each case.
