One of the most extraordinary cases in Estate Planning that I have worked on has been a client that was the "other side" of a large commercial real estate transaction I completed; as it turned out he was in need of Federal estate planning and was referred to me. This man accumulated $42 million dollars and needed extensive estate planning; with some creative planning we have been able to reduce his Federal and New Jersey Estate Tax of approximately $20,000,000 to zero, and reduced his estimated probate expense by approximately 50%. I must admit I was fortunate to be working with a client who wanted to aggressively eliminate taxation and together we were able to satisfy his objective.

I have concentrated on Estate Planning and Elder Law services since 1992. My focus has been on "Asset Preservation" resulting in the elimination or reduction of Federal and New Jersey Estate Taxation by the use of Revocable and Irrevocable Trusts such as Life Insurance Trusts, Qualified Personal Residence Trusts, Revocable Living Trusts Dynasty Trusts, among other Estate Planning tools. I provide a conservative and professional approach in my Ridgewood, New Jersey office which analyzes the client's needs and objectives and considers the nature of the client's assets and liabilities and thereafter matches the aforementioned to an appropriate strategy for Asset Preservation, or Probate.
Born in Paterson, New Jersey, my family moved to Ridgewood, New Jersey to permit the children to benefit from the excellent school system. Upon completion of my high school education, I attended Alfred University, completing a dual major in Business Administration and Economics. I graduated Alfred University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Upon completion of college, I attended The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois and received a Doctor of Laws Degree in 1971.
However, during law school, I attended and completed my study of International Law at The Peace Palace, at The Hague Academy of International Law in Brussels, Belgium. I was accepted as a Judicial Clerk by the Honorary William O'Connor and completed my clerkship at the Ocean County Courthouse. Thereafter, I applied for and was accepted as an Assistant County Prosecutor and became a trial attorney for the following five years. After retirement from the Prosecutor's Office, I believed I understood the operation of the court system as a result of my Judicial Clerkship and experience in the Prosecutor's Office. At this time I entered the private practice of law. I built a very active litigation practice; however, I became increasingly interested in Federal and State Estate Tax Planning and Elder Law, as well as residential Real Estate and Commercial Real Estate. Also, I developed an active Corporate and Business Law practice.
For the past twenty-one years, I have concentrated my practice in Ridgewood, New Jersey in the areas of sophisticated Federal and New Jersey Estate Tax Planning and Elder Law as well Real Estate and Corporate Law. My litigation practice has been significantly reduced to accommodate my clients' needs in the areas aforementioned and the focus of my practice in Federal and New Jersey Estate Tax Planning and Elder Law has been on 'Asset Preservation,' which results in the elimination or reduction of Taxation as well as "Quality of Life" planning for the senior years, as fully laid out and explained on my professional website: www.TartaLaw.com.
Chamber of Commerce, respectively held office of Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President and President; Member of local Municipal Planning Board; Member and director of Municipal Boy's Club; Member of National District Attorney's Association; Arbitrator for the Passaic, Bergen and Rockland County Better Business Bureau; Pro-Bono Member and Panel Chair of Early Settlement Panel Passaic County Chancery Division, Superior Court of New Jersey and member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey Fee Arbitration Committee for Bergen County, New Jersey.
I believe it is a great concept for clients to educate themselves on legal issues. However, I caution my clients that "a little bit of knowledge can be a very dangerous thing," and I always recommend that any education a person receives by their research should be confirmed by a consultation with an attorney well-versed in that particular field of law.
I love to.
I am hesitant to coach clients in representing themselves in litigation because issues evolve during litigation that many times require immediate responses by the client who unfortunately does not have the benefit of the education to assist them.
I chose to be a lawyer because I enjoy the interaction with my clients and especially enjoy the gratification for my client as well as myself after we have achieved Asset Preservation among other services.
Having worked together for over thirty years with my clients, first as a County Prosecutor and then in my private practice, has given me the opportunity to coach my clients through litigation with very satisfying results. This relationship of "coaching" has been carried over into my Estate Planning practice and has resulted in the reduction or elimination of Estate Taxation and the reduction of Probate expense repeatedly. This work experience and life experience has been satisfying for my clients, as well as providing me with a true sense of accomplishment.
I chose Estate Planning, Probate and Real Estate Law because it provides me the opportunity to achieve results for my clients that please them.
I love working with people and providing a solution for their problems.
I am a solo practitioner working with an extremely qualified paralegal. All of my clients' needs are addressed either directly by myself or are reviewed by myself in conjunction with my paralegal.
My strength and my style are to build a truly personal relationship with all my clients. After we have built the personal relationship, we can openly address the client's needs.
My personal interests lie in all water sports, as well as tennis and soccer.

At the conclusion of my first consultation I provide a recommendation of "client needs" by way of a list of documentation I recommend, as well as a flat fee for my services. I will represent a client's interest on an hourly basis, however, I discourage this procedure because it inevitably results to excessive fees that I am uncomfortable with.
Varies depending upon the nature and complexity of the issues to be addressed. Hourly fees commence at $250.
I charge a fee for the initial consultation and provide a 100% credit of that fee if I am retained to perform further services.
My retainers vary dependent upon the nature and complexity of the issues. However, Retainer Agreements are always tendered to clients requesting them.
