What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Understanding an area of the law and the legal system by the client can greatly assist me in the prosecution of a case. I like when clients ask me questions, and take an interest in the law, and of course, in the outcome of their case. But the client need also remember that I have over 25 years of experience in the practice of law and in dealing with various courts and adversaries.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will review documents from clients, and incorporate their thoughts, but legal pleadings can be very intricate and subject to many laws, rules and procedures. Formal legal pleadings and legal agreements must have the imprimatur of a competent and learned attorney.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I have assisted clients on a pro bono basis throughout my career. But there is no substitute for having the benefit of competent counsel to represent you.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I wanted to be a lawyer for as long as I could remember. It was never a doctor, or fireman… it was always to be a lawyer.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I always say to my clients: "There but for the grace of God go I." I have had many life experiences that make me a compassionate and understanding lawyer. I extend great patience in dealing with my clients. I care personally about each and every client and treat them with respect and with humility. Each and every client is important to me, and I will always do whatever is necessary to try to make that client a happy and satisfied client.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Henry Portner has built his life and reputation on standing up for consumers and small companies fighting against the big and powerful banks and corporations. In helping people and small business, Henry takes full advantage of Bankruptcy Law, Foreclosure Defense Litigation, Consumer Fraud Laws, Warranty, Product Liability and Automobile Lemon Laws.

Henry is a very likable, down-to-earth guy, who passionately stands and fights for the rights of individuals. He cares deeply for the struggles of ordinary people in these tough economic times.

What do you like best about your career?

Serving the needs of clients, obtaining just results, the challenge and desire for success on behalf of the client, the intellectual process to change the law.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am fortunate in having a staff of highly skilled technicians. The law firm has one of less than 50 HUD Certified Loan Modification Specialists in the entire state of Florida. My Executive Director has a Real Estate Brokerage License and is heavily involved on behalf of the law firm in Short Sales. I also have several former Mortgage Brokers and Real Estate Brokers on staff. I also have an excellent "back office" to help handle my Bankruptcy Petitions - of trained paralegals and proof readers.

What are your strengths and style?

Patience, caring, humility, significant experience, excellent research skills, excellent advocacy skills, ability to think "on my feet", persistence, aggressive in the pursuit of justice, down to earth, and easy to talk to. I have excellent relations with my clients - I do not insulate myself from my clients - they all know me firsthand and always have access to me. I return my telephone calls promptly. I often try to answer the phone - I like talking to new clients and exploring their issues.
