Not only do I attend continuing legal education seminars, but as with the other members of our firm, due to our expertise and reputation, we are often asked to speak at seminars on different topics. For example, twice in the last 2 months I have been invited to be a speaker to discuss options that homeowners have when falling behind in their mortgage and to discuss short sales wherein the lenders agree to reduce the pay-off amount when homeowners owe more on the mortgage loan than what the house is worth.
In so many instances clients have shown such gratitude to me for my services that it makes me glad I am a lawyer. Recently, I had a client who was in foreclosure and the court ordered auction sale date was in 2 days. I was able to put together and file an emergency motion in time. I was successful in getting a judge to hear the motion on such short notice and I was successful in getting the judge to extend the sale date 30 days over the objection of the bank's attorney. With the additional time granted, the client was given an opportunity to work out terms with his lender that he did not have before.

Our firm has 4 attorneys with legal experience ranging from 15 years to over 30 years. Our firm counsels many clients who are struggling with financial hardships and in doing so we assist many clients with bankruptcies. I did my first bankruptcy back in 1991. Our firm has an additional attorney whose practice has been exclusively bankruptcy since 1977. Also, our firm does personal injury, worker's compensation, real estate, estate planning, and probate.
Our firm has 3 partners. Charles Newland, Stephen Newland, and Gary Newland. We are brothers who grew up in Arlington Heights. Chuck started his own practice in 1991 and later in 1991 I joined Chuck to create the law firm of Newland & Newland. In 1993, Gary joined the firm and the name changed to Newland, Newland & Newland. Since that time our firm has operated out of 2 main offices. We have one in Arlington Heights and one in Libertyville. To better serve our clients we also have satellite offices in Elgin and Crystal Lake.
Since forming our firm so many years ago, our practice has continued to grow. Most of our clients come to us from referrals from other satisfied clients and from other people in the field who are familiar with the quality of our service and who are aware of our tremendous reputation.
Due to our growth, our firm has taken on one of the most highly respected and experienced bankruptcy attorneys in the Chicago area, Richard Mann, as of counsel to the firm with over 30 years of bankruptcy experience to work with us on bankruptcy matters.
Our firm has 6 support staff members with tremendous experience that assist us in aiding our clients.
Prior to starting my own practice in 1991, I was employed at the law firm of Leonard M. Ring and Associates in Chicago. Mr. Ring's firm was considered by many to be one of the top personal injury firms in the nation. While there, I worked on large newsworthy cases such as major aviation disasters and the Tylenol poisonings case. Also while at Mr. Ring's firm, I provided legal services at the DePaul Legal Clinic to clients unable to afford an attorney.
At our bankruptcy website, IllinoisBankruptcyCenter.org, we include answers to frequently asked questions to assist our clients in being informed in some of the basic principles of bankruptcy. I believe that being informed is a good thing.
Typically my clients will have me prepare any legal documents but I am certainly willing to review any documents that they prepare.
Generally, when I represent my clients I give 100 percent. If a client wants to represent himself but have me be there to merely coach him, then I would encourage him to let me run with the ball as it is what I do.
I decided to go to law school and be a lawyer because as a lawyer I felt that I could have an opportunity to help people who are going through difficult times. As a lawyer I have the knowledge and know-how to be a productive member of society to assist people who are in need of help.
Whenever I meet with a client who is in need of assistance, I always put myself in their shoes. It helps me to understand how they feel and what I can do to better serve them.
It is important to like what you do for a living. I do not do any divorce law because if I did I would not like my job. A benefit of being my own boss is that I can focus on what areas of law interest me.
The best thing about my career is that people come to me when they need help and it's my job to help them. It is very rewarding. When clients go out of their way to thank me and tell me the difference that I made in their lives, I know that I chose the right profession.
I have 2 law partners. One partner is my older brother by 4 years. The other law partner is my younger brother by 2 years. We get along quite well. Plus I consider them both to be the best lawyers that I know. We also have one of the best and experienced support staff of any law firm, consisting of paralegals and legal assistants. Chyrel is the lead staff member on all bankruptcy cases, with support from Eva and Geralyn. Lynn, Geralyn and Eva deal with all real estate related issues, while Patti and Esther spend much of their time on injury cases and worker's compensation. Attorney Richard Mann focuses solely on bankruptcy.
People typically tell me that after they meet with me at a consultation they feel so much better. I have been told that I am good at communicating with the clients what we will be able to do for them. I explain things in a manner that layman can understand. Many times after a consultation clients have told me how surprised they are that I gave them so much of my time. They often express they have not had that type of an experience before when dealing with a lawyer. I am always accessible to clients. Whether by telephone or email, I will always be available for my clients.
I have 3 relatively young children, ages 7, 9 and 15, so a lot of time outside of work relates to their activities and doing things with them. For example, I coach many of my kids' teams; baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer. Also I still like to play some ball and currently play on more than one softball team. One of my softball teams includes my law partners. In the past I played a lot of golf, but I rarely do these days. When my kids get older and want to play, I will take that game up again.
Chyrel is our staff member that runs the bankruptcy department at our firm.

We offer very reasonable fixed rate fees for bankruptcy so that the client knows what the fees are before they retain us. Our fees are very reasonable, but may vary depending on the client's circumstances as all cases are unique in their own way. If you mention you saw us on Nolo at your initial consultation, we will offer you a $100 discount off our fee.
For some issues we offer hourly billing, but as most clients prefer flat fee rates, we usually do matters on a flat fee.
We offer free consultations to all clients. We do not put a time limit on bankruptcy consultations. We want the client to be as comfortable as possible and we do not want them to feel as if we are rushing them.
For bankruptcy cases, we only require a $250 retainer. However, if we need to do means testing to determine Chapter 7 versus Chapter 13 eligibility then we require a $500 retainer.
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
