My staff and I specialize in partnering with our clients to meet the needs of their lives: helping them organize their business, buying homes, building assets, helping with family problems and resolving conflict. I encourage clients to explore alternative conflict resolution, including negotiation, mediation and collaborative law before engaging in litigation.
Ward & Murphy was formed by the merger of the practices of Jack Ward in Ithaca and Evan Webster in Groton. Both of those practices served people in Tompkins County for nearly twenty years. Over those twenty years, both Jack and Evan built solid reputations for providing their clients with timely solutions to their legal problems. I joined the practice in 1999 soon after moving back to New York, having practiced law for over ten years in New York City, Pittsburgh and Wilmington.
I started my career with a large law firm in New York City. After a brief stint in Pittsburgh, I spent nearly eight years with a securities litigation firm in Wilmington, Delaware, helping investors recover from stock fraud and doing pro bono work on the local desegregation case. My family and I decided to move to Ithaca nearly ten years ago so that we could be closer to our families and so that I could take over a law practice that focused on providing comprehensive legal services to a community.
CV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell, Empire State Counsel recognition for 50+ hours of pro bono work in 2007 and 2008.
Our philosophy is to practice law in such a way that clients can trust us to learn a client's needs, to give accurate answers, to produce accurate document and to finish our work on time. We work with our clients as a team focused on successfully resolving challenges, whether it is a unique solution to conflict or an innovative solution to a problem. As a firm, we trust each other to stay on deadline, to communicate clearly and to work cooperatively and collaboratively to improve ourselves and our clients, both as professionals and as people.
Reviewing documents prepared by clients is a routine part of our practice. We look forward to partnering with clients in this way. Where possible, we like to discuss the matter with clients before they start drafting so we can both be focused on the audience and the final result.
Coaching is a normal part of our practice and we have retainer arrangements to structure this kind of relationship.
I believed that becoming a lawyer would be the best use of my talents for research, attention to detail, public speaking and my curiosity about people.
My continuing work with young people in various organizations helps keep me focused on teaching my skills to others and responding to their needs.
I believed that general practice is an overlooked, but critical part of legal services. In my opinion, clients need and deserve a lawyer who will keep all of their needs in mind as the lawyer resolves one particular legal issue.
I appreciate the opportunity to help clients find a good resolution to their issue, whether it is by helping them craft a custody and visitation agreement that fits their family's need, setting up a new business, or giving an elderly person the peace of mind that their personal business has been organized well.
I have been fortunate to build a practice with Amy Jackson. Ms. Jackson is an experienced legal assistant and former court clerk. She is calm with clients, careful with detail and able to balance the many demands of a busy general practice. I also appreciate the chance to teach others about the business of the law: we often employ college interns and high school file clerks.
I bring clarity and organization to client's legal needs. We have an extensive library of client files and resource files so we can collaborate with our clients to offer continuity in satisfying their legal needs. I bring a "teamwork" attitude to clients' needs and our work space. I look for opportunities to work with clients and my staff in finding unique solutions to clients' problems.
I am focused on my family and my community. Those focuses give me the chance to enjoy hiking and camping locally, reading and slowly renovating my family's old farmhouse.
