The Law Office of Gretchen L. Taylor is a full service law firm located steps away from the Fairfax County Courthouse in Fairfax, Virginia. To serve my clients most effectively, I focus my practice on DUI, traffic, and criminal defense.
The Law Office of Gretchen L. Taylor was established in August of 2008.
I have been litigating criminal matters exclusively since I began practicing law in 1995. I began my legal career as an Assistant Public Defender. In January of 1998, I accepted a job as a prosecutor with the Newport News Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. As a prosecutor, I tried dozens of jury trials (averaging about 1 per month) on charges ranging from DUI to murder. In October of 2002, I left the prosecutor's office to become an Assistant Federal Public Defender. During my tenure there, I exclusively defended people charged with federal crimes, including mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, drug and firearm trafficking, as well as misdemeanor crimes that occurred on military bases, such as DUIs, and theft of government property. In 2008, I decided to open up my own law office in Fairfax, Virginia.
I taught first and second year law students at the College of William and Mary as an Adjunct Professor of Law for four years. I taught Legal Skills, a trial and appellate advocacy class that also teaches legal research and writing.
I always encourage my clients to be active participants in their own defense.
I frequently review documents prepared by clients.
I would discourage clients from representing themselves. It is best to have a professional on your side rather than to try to do it yourself.
I became interested in criminal justice in college while researching the death penalty for my Honors thesis. I felt drawn to a profession where I could utilize my communication and advocacy skills to help people.
I believe that the best criminal attorneys have both prosecuted and defended a wide range of clients. The experience I gained as a prosecutor enables me to analyze a case from each side and to competently and aggressively represent my clients. In addition, I have worked as both a state and federal defense attorney, representing a large number of people in wide variety of legal situations.
Criminal law touches upon that which is most important to all of us -- our freedom.
As the owner of my own practice, I have the freedom and ability to help the people that I feel most need my services. The criminal justice system is confusing and intimidating to those unfamiliar with it. I enjoy navigating my clients through the maze of the criminal justice system while always seeking the best possible outcome on their behalf.
I am a solo practitioner and personally handle each case from beginning to end. I also have a wonderful assistant who is attentive to all of my clients' immediate needs.
My biggest strength is my ability to communicate effectively with my clients, to help them understand the criminal process, their case, and to assist them in making the best decisions possible. I am a tough negotiator and an aggressive advocate in court.
I am a wife and mother of two young children. I enjoy traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
