Bar Admissions

CA, May 1981
Bar Number: 98371

Other Court Admissions

U.S. District Court, San Diego.

Association Memberships

California State Bar and Arizona State Bar.

Continuing Education

Currently, I have a Rutter Group membership. Rutter Group is a leading provider of continuing education that provides material for firms in rural communities to have access over the web. Both California and Arizona require continuing education components. If you do not reside in Arizona but practice in both states, the California compliance suffices.

Papers and Publications

I have published a number of articles on labor law subjects and have also presented at seminars.

Example Cases

Recently, I have worked on a number of dependency cases where the children have been returned to their respective parent and/or services to achieve this ultimate goal that has been ordered for the parents. In other cases where I have represented children, I have had to argue that it was not in their best interest to return them to the parent because the parent has failed their services.
On criminal cases, I have handled a number of misdemeanor criminal appeals where there have been issues regarding search and seizure and failure to provide Miranda warnings.

Firm Focus and History

The focus of the firm is labor and employment, misdemeanor/DUI, worker's compensation, social security, and dependency law. The focus of our worker's compensation applicant practice is in Arizona. We are licensed in Arizona and California.

Ten years ago, we started out primarily representing worker's compensation insurance companies and employers in the labor law and worker's compensation fields.

Years later, our focus changed to representing families involved in dependency court. We also have handled many misdemeanor appeals. We have continued throughout the years to represent employers in the labor law and worker's compensation area Our employee worker's compensation practice is now exclusively focused on Arizona cases.

The firm has also branched into misdemeanor DUI and traffic cases and cases before the DMV. We are licensed in California and Arizona and locally in Imperial and Yuma Counties. Our office is located in Calexico, California.

Previous Employment Summary

I have twenty years experience representing California and Arizona employers in various administrative venues and courts. I ventured into private practice after my employer closed its local law office.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

The more specific or involved an issue is, a person may spend hours and hours on research and never find the answer. For basic issues, client research is fine. After that, clients should seek professional advice.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Solo practitioners in a large part must be flexible in their willingness to review documents and coach non-retained clients. Neither is it without a risk component for both the attorney and the client. As long as the nature of representation or lack thereof is clearly understood and the amount of the fee is clearly established, we are willing to assist individuals who ask for help.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

In today's legal and economic climate this is perfectly reasonable, depending on the case.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I really enjoyed the legal and law related subjects I took in undergrad courses. I have always enjoyed reading and am an analytical thinking.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I worked my way through my university and professional school to help pay for my education. After law school, I worked for twenty years in the labor and employment law and worker's compensation defense fields.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I studied labor law in law school and enjoyed it. My first and only job out of law school was working for a firm that specialized in labor law for growers and shippers in California and Arizona. It was this work that led me to worker's compensation defense as well. I was with this firm for nearly twenty years. After the firm closed its office in El Centro, I decided to stay in this small rural community and open my own practice. Through court appointed work, I have since handled a number of misdemeanor appeals, which I also enjoy. It has afforded me a unique insight into the criminal law area of practice.

What do you like best about your career?

My career has allowed me to be relatively independent and has afforded me to travel and raise a family. I don't take it for granted that it is a privilege to represent clients in our justice system.

Tell us about your law firm:

We have a small staff including an office manager who works part-time in the afternoon and a secretary that handles intake. Both staff members are bilingual.

What are your strengths and style?

I am pragmatic in my approach to cases. I was raised in a middle class environment which I believe allows me to better relate with my clients.
I also am a very good listener. Some attorneys can go on and on, belaboring a point until it's utterly redundant. I do not like that particular tactic and it's not my style. I enjoy research and getting to the ultimate issue involved in a particular case. I have been married for twenty-five years, raised two successful young men, one with autism. Dealing with a special needs child is not easy, but with the patience and teamwork of the immediate family it is possible to succeed and grow through it.
If you are represented by our firm, you will not be just a number. If you call, we will return your call as soon as possible.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy walking and playing volleyball, even at age 53. My wife and I enjoy dancing, hiking, traveling, and live music, particularly jazz.
