Example Cases

1) A young teenager was charged with felony retail theft. She was getting ready to start college and would lose her financial aid if found guilty of this charge. After significant negotiation she received supervision (which is not a conviction) on a reduced misdemeanor charge and was able to keep her scholarship.

2) In a capital murder case with two eye witnesses to the shooting of two individuals in a candy store, an investigation was conducted that determined that one of the witnesses had been accused of shooting someone in the same neighborhood. After uncovering this information we were able to convince the jury at trial that the client was not guilty in this capital case.

Firm Focus and History

The Law Office of Kelly L. Seago focuses on criminal defense of misdemeanor, felony and capital cases.

The Law Office of Kelly L. Seago was started in 2007 after I was involved in the area of Public Service Law for over a decade.

Previous Employment Summary

I previously worked for the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender in the areas of civil defense of parents whose children had been removed due to abuse and neglect allegations, juvenile defense of both misdemeanor and felony cases, and the defense of adults in all felony cases including death penalty defense.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I adjust my representation to the level of the client's familiarity with the legal system. If a client is not well versed in the criminal justice system, I spend extra time explaining how each of the different elements of the court system work and how they apply to that client and their case.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am happy to review documents pertaining to a client's case within the structure of each case.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am not willing to do so.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became a lawyer because that was the career I was drawn to at an early age, from high school debate and government, to college study of different aspects of human behavior. Once I entered law school and worked in various internships I realized this was the area that I could use my abilities to help people.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My extensive criminal defense background within the Cook County Public Defender's Office allowed me to be in a courtroom every day gave me a wide range of experiences with different judges and prosecutors as well as a vast range of experience with all manner of different cases from initial charging to resolution.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I was always drawn to the area of criminal law from before I went to law school. After working with the Public Defender, the Appellate Defender and multiple mediation programs, I feel that criminal defense is the area where I can use my specific skills and help people most effectively.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy helping people and learning the new aspects of ever-changing law.

Tell us about your law firm:

I have a number of investigators and interpreters available to assist in each client's specific needs.

What are your strengths and style?

I am an excellent trial attorney and enjoy that aspect of my work very much. I also have an extensive mediation background that allows me to be an extremely effective negotiator when necessary. I work with family members and clients to fully explain all options and help each individual discover the right course of action for their case.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy traveling and interaction with other countries and cultures. I have so far traveled as far from home as New Zealand and Fiji, but also enjoy the many museums and varied art and food of Chicago. I am an avid book reader and gardener. I do also enjoy my electronics and technology, and even implement it in my defense work at times.
