I attend continuing education classes on civil litigation, real estate, business, and estate planning.
1. Civil litigation - I represented the plaintiff in a breach of contract case and obtained a multi-million dollar judgment, which was one of the largest judgments in the state.
2. Business transactions - I represented a small business in creating their sales contracts, which are open account contracts, to reduce the amount of their accounts receivable.
3. Estate planning - I do many estate plans on a flat fee basis to provide cost-effective solutions to clients. I also do more specialized plans for many clients as part of their business plan.
4. Real estate - I helped a client with a substantial amount of property address an encroachment on the property and title insurance issues.

I have worked in a variety of positions in both private practice and in government work. I have clerked for both a trial court and the Minnesota Court of Appeals. In addition, I have spent time as a prosecutor in Rochester, MN, and have worked at the Pentagon in the U.S. Department of Defense, Office of General Counsel.
In private practice, I have represented individuals in a number of real estate, estate planning, and insurance issues. I have also represented a variety of businesses in sale transactions, collections, mechanics liens, and in business disputes.

Clients should take steps to educate themselves on legal issues. Without that education, it is impossible to understand when an attorney can help, causing clients to either incur unnecessary attorney fees or, even worse, not consult an attorney when there is a serious issue.
I am always willing to review documents clients have prepared. In my experience, clients tend to do better when they are involved in the legal work.
I am willing to help clients represent themselves. Most often, that is not a wise course of action for clients, but, in some cases, that is appropriate. In those cases, I am happy to advise clients who wish to act on their own behalf.
In this day and age, with more and more rules and regulations, lawyers are necessary to help people manage their personal and business affairs.
As a small business owner myself, I understand the value of having a good business plan to ensure the business thrives and of having a well thought out estate plan to provide for my loved ones and to make sure my business survives.
Throughout my years of practice, I've come to understand that an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure. After seeing some of the problems that can arise if an estate plan is poorly conceived, or not prepared at all, or if a business does not show proper planning, I decided to focus on estate planning and business law.
My favorite part of my career is seeing how my preventative measures actually help clients. For example, I have a business client I've worked hard with to reduce the client's accounts receivable. I've seen firsthand just how useful some of the techniques are, and it is very gratifying to see that and know that was a lawsuit avoided while still accomplishing everything the client could have hoped for.
I am a solo practitioner, and clients speak directly with me. My paralegal is fantastic and relates well to others. My assistant/office manager has a wealth of experience outside of the legal world and has a great understanding of non-legal issues.
I offer comprehensive services in estate planning, business, and real estate to my clients. As a result, I have the ability to foresee potential problems before they occur and address them before they become insurmountable issues. Therefore, my clients are able to minimize their legal fees because their legal matters can often be addressed before they become extremely expensive and time consuming.
Outside of the office, I have a variety of interests. I am very active in Republican politics in many positions. I enjoy a number of sports, including downhill skiing, ice hockey, and tennis. Lastly, I am a fan of classical music and was a trumpeter before becoming a lawyer.
