Firm Focus and History

Scott and Scott maintains a general civil, criminal, and trial practice with an emphasis on criminal law, serious automobile accidents, motorcycle accidents, DWI/DUI, drug offenses, domestic violence, and family law including juvenile law.

Scott and Scott was established in 1951 by my mother, Doris P. Scott. I joined the firm in 1985 and together, we have over 80 years combined legal experience. Our associate J. Thomas Murray joined the firm in 2007 after clerking for Judge Lidiums. Scott and Scott is committed to providing the highest quality legal representation in a variety of practice areas. Together the lawyers of Scott and Scott strive to bring the highest level of integrity to the legal profession, while zealously protecting the client's interests and serving the needs of the community.

Previous Employment Summary

I have been practicing law for 24 years in the areas of criminal law and serious personal injury. While in law school I prosecuted cases for the Cecil County State's Attorney's Office, before undertaking criminal defense in 1986.

Activities and Awards

Scott and Scott is an AV-rated law firm (the highest rating assigned by Martindale-Hubbell).

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

The more informed a client is on a legal issue, the better the client can make the right decision and expect a realistic outcome.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Reviewing documents prepared by clients is prudent and can save the client countless problems down the road. Frequently, it adds to the lawyer's understanding of the client's goals and objectives.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

While I am willing to help clients who want to represent themselves, outside of small claims court or a speeding ticket, it is generally unwise for a client to represent themselves even if they have some legal training.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

While I knew at an early age (after watching episodes of Perry Mason and seeing To Kill a Mockingbird) that I wanted to become a lawyer, working at the firm in high school solidified my goal of helping people achieve justice.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Growing up with both parents being lawyers, I have been surrounded by the law my entire life and had strong mentors who helped instill a desire for excellence.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

In the criminal arena, seeing the disparate sentences of defendants represented by public defenders or inexperienced counsel caused me to want to work hard on behalf of my clients to achieve the best possible result. In the personal injury field, I take pride in insuring clients are fairly compensated for life's tragedies.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy the opportunity to help people solve problems that they are unable to manage themselves and appreciate the thanks I receive for a job well done.

Tell us about your law firm:

We have the best staff to work with. All calls are returned promptly. If I am in a trial, my associate Tom Murray is available to answer any emergency questions.

What are your strengths and style?

My biggest strength is thorough preparation. I've won many cases that I probably shouldn't have because I was much better prepared than the opposition.

Personal Interests:

When not at work, I enjoy being outdoors, hunting, fishing, sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and rooting for the Ravens. I volunteer for two non-profits in the area of historic preservation.
