Example Cases
I recently represented the majority shareholder of a publicly-traded beverage company against breach of contract and tortious interference with contract claims in federal court. The employee contended that he was entitled to nearly one million dollars worth of stock options and additional compensation for the tort claims. I secured a dismissal of all claims.
I recently represented the minority shareholder of a start-up mental health company who had a membership/management dispute with the other owners. The company filed a derivative action against the client, alleging breach of contract, fraud, conversion, and unfair and deceptive trade practices. I filed counterclaims and negotiated a settlement that enabled the client to sell his interest back to the company.
I currently represent the families of two inmates who committed suicide in local jails. One case is pending in state court, and the other case is pending in federal court.

Firm Focus and History
Our firm represents individuals and businesses in state and federal courts throughout North Carolina in a wide range of civil litigation matters. We routinely represent businesses in disputes with each other that include actions based on breach of contract and business torts. We also represent individuals who have been severely injured by businesses (or local government) because of negligent and/or intentional misconduct.

Previous Employment Summary
Immediately following law school, I worked as an associate with Dicksten, Shapiro, Morin & Oshinsky LLP (now Dickstein Shapiro) in Washington, DC. There, I worked on behalf of corporate policyholders against their insurance companies, and gained significant experience in claims for environmental liability, products liability, professional malpractice liability, and foreign asset expropriation. After leaving Dickstein Shapiro, I joined a small firm, also in Washington, DC, where I represented individuals and small businesses in civil litigation matters that included police misconduct, employment discrimination, predatory lending, and civil rights. In 2007 I moved back to North Carolina to practice with Blue Stephens & Fellers.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
Clients who educate themselves on relevant legal issues generally demonstrate a profound interest in their legal problem and are better able to understand the concerns that may arise in negotiations or litigation. I believe this enables them to more fully understand and actively participate in the representation.

I will review documents as part of an initial consultation.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I have always admired the roles lawyers have played throughout American and world history.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
I would like to think that all of my educational and work experiences have made me a better lawyer. But, at the end of the day, competitive sports and Texas hold 'em deserve at least some credit.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I enjoy civil litigation, and it is what I do best.
What do you like best about your career?
The ability to be flexible and creative.
