My practice is limited to the Defense of Criminal Charges in all Massachusetts Courts (District and Superior) and in all the Federal Courts in Massachusetts and to the handling of criminal related matters (such as sex offender registration, driver's license reinstatement, etc.).
The firm of Lewin & Lewin was established by my father in 1931. In 1975 I took over the firm and since then the firm practice has concentrated in Criminal Defense and handles only criminal related matters.
In 1971, I was appointed as an Assistant District Attorney in the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office in Massachusetts. I served as an Assistant District Attorney from 1971 to 1975. As an Assistant District Attorney, I prosecuted criminal cases in all the District Courts in Middlesex County as well as in the Superior Court in Middlesex County. As an Assistant D.A., I prosecuted every type of criminal case from serious felonies such as rape and homicide to misdemeanors. In 1975, I left the District Attorney's Office to begin a career in Criminal Defense. My practice is now and for many years has been limited to Criminal Defense.
I have achieved the highest peer rating by other lawyers, the AV Rating by Martindale-Hubbell.
I like to educate my clients regarding the legal issues in their cases. I spend a considerable amount of time doing this. I give every client a copy of the charges against them and a copy of the criminal statutes they are accused of violating and I explain in detail what it is the state or federal government must prove. All defenses are discussed in detail. I have no objection to a client educating themselves as that can engender a discussion between the client and me about the law of their case and that can be helpful; however, it is my job to make sure that the client knows the law of his/her case and I make sure that they do.
I am always willing to review documents prepared by clients. Strong, open communication between me and the client is essential and always leads to a better result.
I will not do this at all.
My father was a trial lawyer and at a young age I was exposed to the law and the courtroom. As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a criminal trial lawyer. In Malden High School I played the part of "Perry Mason" (a TV lawyer show from the 1950s and 1960s) and in my high school yearbook it was said that I would be a criminal lawyer.
As a student I studied hard, as an athlete I played hard, and as a lawyer I work hard. I have raised two children and have four grandchildren. I have been active in my community. I have represented over 5,000 clients since 1975; I like to think I know a little about human nature and human frailty. Over the years I have learned what judges and jurors want to hear and what they do not want to hear. I have learned what works and what does not work. I have learned when to speak up and when to shut up. These are lessons that only come from years of experience.
I enjoy the humanity of the criminal law. I enjoy working with people who find themselves in a jam. I thoroughly enjoy the reward that comes from doing a great job for someone else. I love the criminal courtroom and using the skills I was gifted with.
I love the war dance. The war dance is when you've won a tough case and your client and his family are thrilled and they shake your hand and hug you and say "thanks." There is nothing like it.
I am a solo practitioner and I do all the work on my clients' cases. I go to court with the clients and the clients deal directly with me.
I am always prepared and it shows. I am extremely well-respected by all the judges before whom I appear. I am respected by all the prosecutors in all the courts I go to.
I enjoy the outdoors. I am an avid skier, hiker, and climber.

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
