Firm Focus and History

Peter Thompson & Associates is Maine's premier personal injury law firm. We are injury law specialists, with over 30 years combined experience helping accident victims obtain the maximum benefits possible for their injuries.

Individuals and families who have been seriously injured in accidents trust us to handle their cases not only because of our track record of large jury verdicts and settlements, but also because of our consistently high customer satisfaction ratings. For the last four years we've been chosen "Best Personal Injury Lawyer" in Portland and Bangor. At Peter Thompson & Associates, every client matters to us.

In 2007, I was designated a New England "Super Lawyer," an honor awarded to the top five percent of lawyers in New England. I am also a longstanding member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and am listed in Who's Who in American Law.

Peter Thompson & Associates was established in 1994 with a statewide practice. We opened our Bangor office in 2007.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to and while I attended Bowdoin College, I ran several small businesses in Bar Harbor, Maine, where my mother had an art gallery for over 30 years.

Activities and Awards

Designated a New England "Super Lawyer" in 2007 and 2008 (top 5% of all lawyers). Voted "Best Personal Injury Lawyer" in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 in both Portland and Bangor in independent surveys conducted by Market Surveys of America. "A+" rated by the Better Business Bureau, its highest rating.

I am the Volunteer Legal Director of the Consumer Health Law Program, a program that provides free legal services to individuals who have been denied health insurance benefits. I also serve on the boards of the Disability Rights Center and the Brain Injury Association of Maine.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

The vast majority of my clients are not familiar with how insurance companies will frequently engage in unfair tactics in order to delay, devalue, or deny claims outright. I understand those tactics and know how to level the playing field for my clients. If an insurance company refuses to settle a case for a fair and reasonable amount and forces me to resolve my client's cases in court, I and my highly experienced team of lawyers, paralegals, private investigators, and expert consultants will fight aggressively to win the case. Our track record speaks for itself (see http://www.peter-thompson-associates.com/Recent_Case_Results.html). We always keep our clients fully informed about the legal and evidentiary issues that affect their case so that they can make intelligent decisions. That said, almost all of our clients seek out and defer to our advice about how much their cases are worth.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

We welcome any information that our clients provide to us concerning their cases.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I and the other attorneys at our firm frequently provide advice at no charge.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I and the other attorneys in my firm share the same objective: helping people who have serious injuries get back on their feet by protecting their interests and leveling the playing field when they are up against an insurance company. We seek to be the best at what we do. However, being the best means more to us than just winning cases—it is just as important to us that our clients can trust that we will fulfill our promises to them. Our reputation for honesty and integrity earned us an "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau, its highest rating. "The ratings represent the Better Business Bureau's degree of confidence that a business is operating in a trustworthy manner and will make a good faith effort to resolve any customer concerns."

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

The other attorneys in my firm and I all commit hundreds of hours each year to providing pro bono legal services and to supporting organizations such as the Brain Injury Association of Maine through direct involvement in their organizations and financial support. I am also the Volunteer Legal Director of the Consumer Health Law Program. I have assisted hundreds of individuals obtain medical care that their HMOs denied. Through this pro bono work, I have seen how insurance companies frequently engage in unfair and underhanded tactics to deny claims. This experience helps me to better protect my clients' interests.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

We (myself and my entire legal team) enjoy helping people get back on their feet when they are dealing with serious injuries that frequently result in significant financial stress. Keeping insurance companies from taking advantage of people who are often extremely vulnerable due to their injuries and financial stress is very satisfying.

What do you like best about your career?

When a client trusts us with their case, we take that responsibility very seriously. We all enjoy working closely with Mainers and helping them to resolve their legal problems and be treated fairly.

Tell us about your law firm:

We are a highly specialized mid-sized firm with 4 lawyers, 3 paralegals, and other support staff. We have been specializing in this field since 1994 and all of our staff is experienced in this area of the law. Our firm uses a team approach, so that we work together closely on cases. I personally develop what I refer to as a "success plan" and work closely with my staff to implement that plan. Our firm's track record speaks for itself (see http://www.peter-thompson-associates.com/Recent_Case_Results.html). We focus considerable time and attention to our clients' specific needs. Every client matters to us. We recently received the following note from a grateful client: "I want to thank you and your staff for all you and they did. The professional and compassionate way my case was handled is greatly appreciated. It was a pleasure to do business with your firm and if the need ever arises I will be back in touch. Thank you again." M. H., Bangor.

Another client similarly recognized our firm's focus on our clients' specific needs in a thank you note: "I want to thank you again for representing me. You don't know me or my circumstances, yet you offered to take the case pro bono. Your kindness and generosity really meant a lot to me. I don't have to tell you how thrilled I am with the outcome. I will never forget your expertise and valuable time you gave me. A great weight has been lifted from my shoulders and it feels really good." B. P., Sanford. What are your strengths and style?

I think a client summed my strengths and style up best in a thank you note he wrote me recently: "Thank you for your efforts and hard work in resolving my case. Your leadership and initiatives were outstanding. I felt truly represented, respected and was treated with honesty and integrity. We are grateful for a positive result and grateful for the excellent teamwork!" L. D., Portland.

Personal Interests:

What little time I have left at the end of the day is devoted to attending my children's various Little League games, swim meets, etc.
