Example Cases

One of my most rewarding cases involved a middle-aged lady of limited income who had spent all her money on her children's problems. We filed her case in one day and saved her home from foreclosure sale. Also, I am pleased to see the clients who file their bankruptcy and fix their debt issues and come back to us later for purchasing real estate or refinancing their home.

Firm Focus and History

I have been involved in debtor/creditor issues since even before law school. Since then I have practiced law for over 27 years in the Charleston Lowcountry in many areas of law in addition to bankruptcy. This gives me a wide area of experience to understand the implications of the various legal problems that clients may have as their problems are not always just debt. We focus on personal attorney attention to your problems and our most rewarding cases are when clients tell us how happy they are and are so relieved now that they have stress relief. We love to have our success stories that lick their debt and reorganize their financial life and have a much improved future.

Steadman Law Firm, PA was formed in 1992 to provide a more focused practice on bankruptcy and debt relief, real estate, and related legal services for the Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester County areas. We also serve other counties including Colleton, Williamsburg, Horry and others.

Previous Employment Summary

I have previously practiced law as part of larger firms, as branch office of a larger law firm and as in-house counsel to a major credit union. This has given me a wide area of experience to understand the debt process from both sides of the fence in addition to other legal problems a client may be having. For example, prior experience in Family Court gives me a good understanding of what clients are going through in a divorce or separation and the legal issues that may be involved.

Activities and Awards

I have participated and continue to handle pro bono cases referred by the South Carolina Bar and the bankruptcy court. I also am an adjunct instructor at Trident Technical College and serve on their Paralegal Review Board.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients should make every effort to try to understand the legal process, but should remember that the lawyer is the trained experienced professional that can give them the expert advice they need to understand a complicated area of law.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Most clients do not attempt to prepare their own documents. Document review can be had at an hourly rate.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

We do not recommend that clients attempt to represent themselves. Appropriate legal advice can only be given after full and complete analysis of the client's situation. However, we are generally available on an hourly basis for legal advice when a client finds themselves in trouble or in over their head, but not generally for the pro se client to prepare their own case.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

My whole upbringing has been the philosophy of helping others. I was attracted to law due to the interesting complexity and differences in each case.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have worked for lenders and debtors alike. I have experienced life's ups and downs just like you have and this makes me more understanding of what you are going through. I have a family that means an awful lot to me and I understand what it means to you to provide for your family. I have had a wide experience in various types of law so I understand the other legal issues that may be impacting your life.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

It is personally rewarding to see the stress relief given to people through bankruptcy and debt relief.

What do you like best about your career?

I like helping ordinary people and seeing the relief they get and how they go on to happy productive lives without the stress they formerly had.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner and am lucky to have several very experienced assistants. My clients deal directly with me. You see me at your initial consultation and you see me with you at court. My paralegals are great at assisting when I am not immediately available. We are not a huge volume office where you get lost. We know your name and who you are. You are a person to us, a very important person. We know and appreciate that you are going through a very difficult time. We are there to see you through it.

What are your strengths and style?

I am direct and to the point. I will tell it like it is. I will tell you the truth and realistic evaluations and projections on your case. I do not believe in wasting your money.

Personal Interests:

I love family, genealogy and history. I love boating, camping, fishing and enjoying what the Lowcountry has to offer.
