MA, Jun 2000
Bar Number: 646307

Other Court Admissions

Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Federal District Court of Massachusetts.

Association Memberships

Boston Bar Association, National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees.

Continuing Education

Massachusetts has no continuing education requirement for attorneys. However, the local bar associations do a marvelous job of keeping my fellow attorneys and me informed via many conferences and seminars which I make every effort to attend. The law constantly changes and a good attorney must remain current with the changes.

Example Cases

Most bankruptcy cases are the same procedurally. Each case has a "341" meeting, commonly called the meeting of creditors [none usually attend]. The meeting takes place approximately one month after filing the case, where the paperwork filed is reviewed and questions are asked of the client by the United States Bankruptcy Trustee. The client up to this point is still usually very nervous even after I educate them about the process. The best part of this for me is to see the stress fall away from the client at the completion of the 341 meeting.

Firm Focus and History

I started my career as a school teacher and coach from which I bring that same attitude to my law practice. Specifically, the more I educate you about what it is we will do together, the better and easier it will be for the both of us. These are times that are very stressful for you. This knowledge and my expertise will help you relieve that stress and overcome the hurdles you are now facing. Call, I'll make you feel better.

The sole focus of my firm is helping folks who may be able to avail themselves of the United States Bankruptcy Code. As Congress has mandated we are a Federally Designated "Debt Relief Agency."

The Law Office of Wm. E. Campbell had it's beginnings as Campbell Bonenfant & Associates which is located in downtown Medford, MA where I still maintain a presence. As said previously in other sections of this profile, the only area of law we practice is Bankruptcy.

Previous Employment Summary

From 1981 until I passed the Massachusetts bar exam in 2000, I was a Certified Financial Planner©. I was the proprietor of a financial planning and investment advisory firm by the name of Piper Equities, Ltd. The knowledge and experience from this profession has been and continues to be extremely valuable. It has assisted my numerous clients in analyzing their financial position and to make informed decisions about bankruptcy. As mentioned previously, I was a high school teacher and football coach. From 1972 to 1982, I was a stock broker for a major New York Stock Exchange firm at which time I moved out on my own to start Piper Equities, Ltd.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

All clients should educate themselves about their legal issues whether they retain legal help or not! However, to paraphrase an old adage: one who has himself as a lawyer has a fool for a client.

Harry A. Blackman, Associate Justice, US Supreme Court once added "the Court … now bestows a constitutional right on one to make a fool of himself."*

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

There are always numerous documents associated with a bankruptcy filing that must be prepared by the client and I will review any and all of these documents as they pertain to the filing. However, I cannot review bankruptcy documents unless I am retained. I cannot give legal advice without being your attorney and I only become your attorney when I am retained.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I refer you to my earlier response to the question on educating oneself.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I was fifty years of age when I entered law school. I had been a successful financial planner and had dealt on a professional level with many attorneys and thought I might give it a try and I am very glad I did. I enjoy being an attorney and I would do it all over again if I could.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

It is as if my entire prior professional career has contributed to my being a better attorney. Instead of re-writing it, I refer you to my previous answers about my employment history under the Work History tab above.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

When first out of law school I tried several other areas but focused in on Bankruptcy for the pleasure in helping my clients relieve their stress.

What do you like best about your career?

I like practicing in Federal Court. Bankruptcy is a relatively narrow area of law and thus the Bankruptcy community is small. I have a very good working relationship, not only with the other attorneys who practice in the Bankruptcy arena including those listed here on Nolo, but also with the "dark side" attorneys [creditors attorneys].

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a sole practitioner concentrating in one area of law. So, unlike trying to weave your way through number punching phone calls, I am the one who usually answers the phone. My paralegal, who speaks Spanish, also carries an office cell phone for those who need it.

What are your strengths and style?

Making my clients feel comfortable about their informed decision to file Bankruptcy!

Personal Interests:

My four grandchildren! I am a runner and enjoy running along the shore here in Lynn.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

For a Chapter 7 case the fee begins at $2,000 plus the Court's filing fee of $299. Mention Nolo Press and receive a 15% discount on my fee. Chapter 13 fees are set under Court Guidelines. A typical initial retainer for a Chapter 13 is $2,000 plus the Court's fee of $274; any balance will be added to the Chapter 13 plan and paid over the life of the bankruptcy through the plan. A Chapter 13 will last from three to five years and is much more complex. A Chapter 11 is a whole different matter and we will discuss fees during the initial consultation.

Again, mention you found us through Nolo Press and we will reduce our initial fee by 15%.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
