I focus on complex cases, and I take on everything, ranging from toxic tort, to securities fraud, to RICO, to civil rights. It’s easier to define me by what I won’t do—tax, bankruptcy, family law, and criminal defense. I also have a rapidly growing practice representing medical providers and a specialized practice before the Missouri Public Service Commission.
Brown Law Office was formed when I tired of working for a national law firm with 300 attorneys spread across 12 offices. My idea was to continue to provide "big firm" legal services to a select group of clients while focusing on the clients I like and the cases I find challenging. So far, the experiment has been a success.
My last job was with a large corporate law firm, where I handled some high-dollar matters and bet-the-company type cases. I came there from the other side of the fence—a small, aggressive plaintiff's firm, where I had some success with civil rights cases. Prior to that, I worked in state government, both as an assistant attorney general, a deputy agency director, and as special counsel to the governor.
When my clients know the law that applies to them, they can participate more fully in developing legal strategy, and they make better decisions. I'm all in favor of it. On the other hand, I don't mind educating clients who don’t have time for self-education.
I do this all the time.
I often coach clients through contract negotiations, and twice I have coached a client through a multi-million-dollar settlement negotiation. There are times when things go smoother without the lawyers in the room. On the other hand, I would never agree to coach a client in pro se litigation.
A good lawyer helps a client solve a problem. I enjoy that.
I have worked as a government lawyer, a plaintiff's lawyer, and a corporate lawyer, so I know what it's like to be on all sides of most kinds of cases. Having been in the shoes of your opponent can be a big advantage both in settlement negotiations and at trial.
Trying a case to a jury involves a different set of skills than drafting a 100-page legal brief for the court of appeals. Handling complex cases allows me to use both sets of skills, and usually the case is critical to the client. For me, that beats a routine or repetitive law practice.
I love the freedom to pick my clients and my cases.
I have a friendly receptionist who forwards every call directly to me. If I'm out of the office, you will be forwarded to my cell phone. I handle all client matters personally.
I focus on the things that matter. I want to identify all of the variables that I can control and then I want to control them. When preparing I never stop analyzing, but when it's time to act, I believe in making the best decision and then carrying it out as boldly as possible.
I like artists and collecting the interesting things they make. I spend as much time in the mountains as I can, and I like to play the guitar.

A telephone consultation is free, and I will talk with a caller until I am ready to say whether I am interested in their case.
If I am going to be paid hourly for litigation, I will not take a case without a retainer of at least $5,000. I also take cases on a contingency basis, with no retainer.
