Previous Employment Summary

I have been in private practice for approximately ten years, first with a large law firm and then with a three attorney firm that I co-founded and then left to start Stavros Law P.C. I clerked for two law firms during law school, interned with a Utah Supreme Court Justice, and presided as a hearing officer before an administrative board. I am also an entrepreneur. In addition to starting two successful law firms, I founded a transportation company and was a co-owner in an agricultural business.

Activities and Awards

• Board Member, Vest Pocket Business Coalition
• Volunteer, Local First Utah

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I want all of my clients to be educated about the law and facts related to their representation, and to take an active role in achieving a successful resolution of their legal matter. Informed clients increase the probability of favorable outcomes in litigation and otherwise.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I review documents prepared by general counsel and in-house counsel for businesses, as well as documents prepared by owners or executives in small businesses. On occasion, I will review documents prepared by an individual.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Generally, I will not coach clients who want to represent themselves. Coaching can lead to significant problems in determining the role of attorney and client. I will not ghost write pleadings or other documents for clients who are representing themselves in litigation. On occasion, however, I do represent clients on a limited engagement (e.g., removal of default judgment) for a limited purpose. I have coached clients on simple matters, like how to file a small claims action, prepare for a small claims hearing, or how and where to file a particular legal document.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

In truth, I just fell into the law. I could read, write and argue fairly well and went to law school to keep my options open. What else was I going to do? I didn't like law school (and, admittedly, many law students) and entered the practice of law with some trepidation. Once I started "practicing law," however, I found areas of the law that I enjoyed and businesses and people I enjoyed working for. I also enjoy helping people navigate significant problems and build significant relationships in their business and personal lives.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I am an entrepreneur and a business owner. I have experienced what it takes to start, operate, grow and close a business. I know the demands of small businesses, the legal services they need and what they expect from a lawyer. My business experience also complements my legal training by helping me resolve legal conflicts in non-traditional and creative ways. Unlike many lawyers, I can think outside of the box with an eye toward accomplishing what you want. I don't litigate because I like to litigate or because that is what I've been trained to do. I am diligent, hard-working and responsible. I take your legal issue seriously and work hard to achieve results for you.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I've had experience with various areas of the law but I settled on the three that I enjoy most.

What do you like best about your career?

All of the lawyer jokes my clients tell me.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner. All of my clients have direct access to me, including my cell phone number, and are encourage to contact me 24/7 if needed. However, just because I'm a solo practitioner doesn't mean I'm on an island and that I'm the only person who can assist you with your legal matter. I have staff to do filing, paperwork, appointments, billing and related matters. I also have built significant relationships with other attorneys who assist me on cases from time to time when additional help is needed or their particular expertise is desired. I also have a number of paralegals at my disposal to assist with cases and to keep the costs of your representation as low as possible, consistent with the high standard I strive for.

What are your strengths and style?

I work well with people and have ability to find common solutions for a problem. I start with an eye toward evaluating a conflict and resolving it in a timely and effective manner. If a problem can be solved quickly and effectively, I want to solve it so that my clients are not excessively burdened by the legal process. This can be accomplished by treating your opponent appropriately and with respect. You can always get mean later. When necessary and appropriate, however, I am a tenacious and aggressive advocate who will do whatever is needed (within the bounds of the law and ethical requirements) to achieve results for my clients. Most importantly, I always put my clients' interests ahead of mine. Your case is never about my ego.

Personal Interests:

Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my wife and children. I enjoy traveling, reading, art, good food and friends, college sports, and being outdoors.
