Example Cases

Estate Planning: I meet with the clients to explain the basics of estate planning and to discuss the clients' particular needs, such as documents which will need to be drafted, insurance and retirement plan beneficiary designations, tax planning, special needs, medical and disability issues, etc., and then I explain how to address those particular needs. After preparation of necessary documents, I explain the documents thoroughly to the clients and assist them in completely all needed asset transfers.

Trust and Estate Administration: I work with the Probate Court, insurance companies, brokerages, banks, etc. to ensure smooth administration of both probate and non-probate estates, and assist the clients with any necessary estate tax returns. I take as much burden off the clients as possible and provide a comforting and compassionate setting for my clients who have recently lost a loved one.

Other Probate Matters: I help clients with the difficult challenges involved in guardianship and conservatorship matters. Example cases:

Established guardianship over 7 year old daughter of divorced parents whose mother was murdered. Worked with father to ensure not only legal guardianship was set up, but also that finances were in order for the care of the daughter, and assisted father in finding attorney to help in wrongful death lawsuit relating to his ex-wife's murder.

Established conservatorship for clients' aging parents, both of whom were suffering from rapidly advancing dementia with associated aggression issues. Also connected client with an elder care support network to ensure parents had comfortable and safe living arrangements and appropriate care.

Firm Focus and History

My firm focuses on providing exceptional, personal, compassionate, and cost-effective counseling and representation to individuals and families in the areas of estate planning and administration and family law, including preparation of wills, trust, powers of attorney and medical directives, trust administration and probate, guardianships, conservatorships, adoptions, divorces, and other trusts and estates and family law matters. In addition, through my employment and business law practice, I put my years of in-house corporate experience to work in providing sophisticated counseling and representation to businesses in the areas of employment law and general business matters, including drafting and negotiation of a wide variety of agreements.

The Grossman Law Firm was initially established as an estate planning practice in Memphis, Tennessee in 2004, and was re-established in San Diego in June of 2009, after I decided to leave my corporate in-house job and get back into private practice so that I could work directly with individuals, families and businesses. The new Grossman Law Firm handles estate planning, probate and family law matters - all to help families work through the complex legal issues involved in these challenging situations. Grossman Law Firm also provides legal services to companies to assist with their employment law and other in-house legal needs.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I encourage my clients to become knowledgeable about the legal issues they are facing, and I try to help them achieve that, both through one-on-one discussions and through seminars on areas of interest to my clients.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am willing to review client-prepared documents for a nominal fee.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

This is something I would evaluate on a case-by-case basis depending upon the circumstances of the client and the sort of legal issues they are facing.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I have always loved solving puzzles and helping others. The practice of law allows me to help others plan for their families and work through difficult challenges by using a combination of my problem-solving, speaking, and writing skills. I particularly love meeting new people, listening to their stories and helping them craft happy endings.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

While my Harvard Law School education and my work in major law firms and public companies undoubtedly has given me skills and training which help to make me an excellent lawyer, I think that some of my life experiences help me to better understand and serve my clients' needs. In the probate arena, I have been on "the other side of the table" in dealing with my aunt's final illness and administering her estate. I bring not only the practical experience, but a real understanding of what clients are going through. I also think that being a mother has given me perspective that helps me to "think outside the box" when helping clients craft their estate plans or deal with family law matters, with a particular focus on identifying and addressing their own needs—both tangible and emotional.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Estate planning, probate, and family law are all areas in which I can work directly with individuals and families to make a real positive difference in their lives, and to truly add value by helping them navigate the often murky waters of the legal system.

What do you like best about your career?

I love being a positive role model for my daughters by building my own business in which I help people every day, and at the same time having the flexibility and financial security to be a great mom to them.

Tell us about your law firm:

As a solo practitioner, I work directly with all of my clients.

What are your strengths and style?

Communication-with clients, judges, adversaries, and so on-is my greatest strength. I listen to my clients. I try to thoroughly explain things to them in a way that they will understand. I work WITH them to solve their problems.

Personal Interests:

First and foremost, I love spending time with my wonderful daughters. I love reading and spending time outdoors-running, cycling, swimming, walking my dogs, and playing at the park. I also love Shakespeare (I met my husband in a Harvard Law School Drama Society Production of Shakespeare's "As You Like It").
