Firm Focus and History

We focus on representing the injured and their families in Springfield, Branson and throughout Southwest Missouri.

The Krebs Law Firm was formed in 2002 with a focus on business litigation and personal injury to build on the expertise I gained while I was an insurance defense attorney with a large St. Louis, MO based firm and self-insured corporation. Using this knowledge of how insurance companies approach claims and injury cases, Krebs Law Firm clients have an experienced protector of their rights and knowledgeable guide through the complexities of both the insurance and legal system. The firm's goal is to help clients successfully bypass the labyrinth of roadblocks put up by insurance companies, and to instead secure injured parties their rightful compensation.

Previous Employment Summary

• 1996 - 1998 Associate Attorney with Greene and Curtis LLP focusing on litigation.
• Associate Attorney with Brown & James focusing on insurance defense.
• 2003 Corporate Counsel with Hotels.com/TravelNow.com.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

A client is essentially a consumer of law services, and as a consumer, should be educated about the product or service being purchased. However, I am concerned when clients substitute professional legal counsel with articles found on the internet or advice given by a well-intentioned friend without legal training. In most cases, a professional legal analysis is desirable as every situation and circumstance is unique and requires experience and thought as to the best possible approach given case law or statutes. Often getting prompt legal advice can save a client time and money in the long run just like early diagnosis and treatment of an illness betters the chance of a quick recovery.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Reviewing documents prepared by a client is an essential part of case preparation.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Not applicable.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I am both a competitive and a curious person, and as a lawyer, every case I take is different which continually provides the variety I need. Trying a case is both an intellectual exercise involving thought and research to ensure the right approach based on history and precedent and a more sports-like head to head competition in the courtroom.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My finance background gives me a pragmatic cost/benefit approach to each case which ensures that we look at all aspects and possible solutions. If pursuing something further is going to be more costly to the client, it may be time to change course. If we are able to justify the time and effort in a certain approach for the benefits gained, it then is advisable to proceed. Either way, the client, as the largest "investor", needs to know all the options and be involved in the decision making.

In a more customer-focused environment as Corporate Counsel for a large company, I learned the importance of explaining things with less legalese which helps me better relate and communicate to my clients. In a large law firm with most interaction between lawyers, one doesn't realize that some terms or lines of thought may not be understood by clients. In a corporation of people from all backgrounds, a more pragmatic way of communication is not only more effective, but required.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

With personal injury litigation, there is an opportunity to help people who have been wronged. I cannot bring back a loved one or relieve pain, but hopefully can help my clients be better positioned for the future with the financial means to receive the health care they need or be able to support a family with a high quality of life. Additionally, it is an opportunity to hold people or corporations responsible for careless actions or injudicious decisions which hopefully can prevent injury to others in the future.

What do you like best about your career?

It sounds like a cliché, but it is helping people. I get a lot of satisfaction of being able to get a good recovery for someone who has been wronged.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, so all of my clients deal directly with me; I have a wonderful assistant who is attentive to all of my clients' immediate needs. I use a registered nurse and paralegals to review and organize medical files.

What are your strengths and style?

I am selective in the cases I take. This allows me to handle each case personally. Early in my career, I represented insurance companies and large corporations, so I have an understanding of how they handle lawsuits and injury settlement negotiations.
