I started my firm in late 2008 when I realized I wanted to be able to help others more directly than the job I then held allowed. I found office space in Historic Downtown District of Hattiesburg, and began accepting clients right away.
I prefer to work on cases dealing with divorce or other areas of family law to assist people in Hattiesburg and the surrounding areas. I attempt to use technology to become more efficient and responsive to the needs of my clients.
My previous employment has given me a wide range of experience to call upon. I started my legal career as a judicial law clerk at the Mississippi Court of Appeals. Then, I came to Hattiesburg where I worked in private practice with a plaintiff's firm trying asbestos liability cases. From there, I worked at another firm performing mostly insurance defense work, and finally, I reached where I am today.
Pro Bono foreclosure work for the Mississippi Center for Justice.
I appreciate having clients who are educated on the issues they face in the legal system. This makes my job easier, and helps clients make wiser decisions concerning their case.
I will review documents that clients have prepared for a fee, but I will not accept any liability for the documents.
I strongly advise people to not represent themselves because their emotional involvement often clouds their grasp of the issues. I have done that myself, and even I, as a lawyer, had difficulty moving past the emotions to see the true issues. While a client would receive the advice I've just stated, I would be willing to coach them. However, they would be charged the same as if I was representing them.
While it sounds like a cliché, I became a lawyer because I want to help people. I have a strong sense of fairness, and I cannot stand people treating others unfairly. I have found that family law and divorce provides me with the greatest satisfaction and sense that I am helping others.
I think my own divorce makes me a better divorce lawyer. I know the mistakes that I made because I was not represented by an attorney, and I want to help others avoid those mistakes. I also think my experience as a military officer, especially my experience serving as the legal officer aboard a ship, helped me develop the "toughness" that is required when fighting for clients.
I really stumbled into it. The majority of cases that came to me after opening my doors were divorce cases. It turns out that I really enjoy this area of practice, so I decided to concentrate in it.
That I am helping people change their lives for the better. Whether it's a divorce, a child custody case, an adoption, or any of the other types of cases I work on, people are usually in a better situation when my work is done.
At the present, I am my law firm. I have a contract paralegal who lives in another state whose services I sometimes use, but the only person who a client will be in contact with is me.
I consider my preference to work alone to be a strength, especially when I have no full-time employees. I consider myself to be a good listener, and I believe that my client is more of a partner to me in the case. The client decides where to go, and it is my job to decide how to get there.
I am very interested in computers and technology of almost any kind. I love to read, and almost always have something to read with me. Much of my "free time," if you want to call it that, is spent with my children.
