Firm Focus and History

I have done criminal defense for more than 20 years, during which I have handled hundreds of appeals and dozens of trials. I have spoken at seminars for attorneys and have argued cases in front of the California Supreme Court.

I have an expertise in driving under the influence cases, including the DMV license problems that they create. I have handled these cases at trial, at the DMV, in the California Court of Appeal, and in the California Supreme Court. I have taken the DMV to court many times to appeal their decisions about license suspensions.

In my work, my job is to correctly understand the story and the legal situation, to make the best decisions about the case, and then do what it takes to make a judge, or a jury, or a District Attorney see things my way.

Previous Employment Summary

Attorney at the criminal defense firm Rockhill, Schaiman & Carr (1989-1992); since then, I have practiced criminal law independently.

Activities and Awards

Contributor to California Drunk Driving Law (Kuwatch, Burglin, and Simons); Judge Pro Tem, San Mateo Superior Court

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

A client must correctly understand his or her legal situation, and a client's own work and research can help accomplish that. The most important thing is that the client have an attorney that clearly and correctly explains the legal situation.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Yes, because I need to get all of the client's input and information, but the reason to have a lawyer is to have the lawyer make the legal decisions in a case. Additionally, I write the papers that I file in court.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

No.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

It is the best work in the world.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have twenty years of experience and dedicated hard work.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Criminal Law is the best legal work in the world.

What do you like best about your career?

I like winning for my clients.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, but I share a building with other criminal defense attorneys and we all share our knowledge and insights with one another.

What are your strengths and style?

I try to combine the detailed knowledge of law that comes from twenty years of handling appeals with a clear and direct way of getting information across to my listener in a courtroom.

I try not to be pompous, and I try to understand other people including clients and the people I deal with in a courtroom.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy playing the guitar and reading books.
