Criminal Defense
I prefer to take on cases where people are looking for their case to have a little more individual attention. I love the work that I do, and I work closely with my clients. I look for clients who are fighters. Settling cases is okay, but prosecutors don't offer a good settlement unless they know that the client and the lawyer are ready to fight. I represent people in the courts of Okanogan County, Ferry County, Stevens County, Spokane County, and Grant County. I defend every sort of criminal case such as DUI/DWI, marijuana cases and other drug offenses, property crimes, violent offenses. I have also done several homicide jury trials.

I attend many trainings sponsored by the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. I enjoy meeting with other lawyers and exchanging ideas. I try to learn the recent scientific challenges that can be brought against evidence and certain testimony. I defend a lot of DUI/DWI and such work requires me to keep up to date on problems with the breath instrument.
I was once called in to help a man unfairly accused of attempted homicide and assault. The man was facing trial in 11 days. I was hired on a Monday, and the following Thursday the jury found him not guilty of all charges.

The focus of my practice is defending people accused of crimes in such courts as Okanogan County, Ferry County, Stevens County, Grant County, Spokane County and Colville Tribal Court. I am available to meet with clients in the cities of Spokane, Okanogan, Colville, Ephrata, Republic, and Nespelem.
I opened my private practice in 2002.
I tried my first jury trial when I was 24 years old as a Rule 9 intern. I have been doing jury trials ever since. My first job out of law school was as a prosecutor for King County in Seattle. In 1998, I was elected Prosecuting Attorney for Ferry County, becoming the youngest elected prosecutor in the State. I did not run for re-election, choosing to open my own law firm in 2002.
I am all in favor of clients educating themselves on the law. The internet, law books, and even newspaper articles can educate clients on the law. I encourage clients to share their thoughts with me.
This does not arise too often in criminal cases but if a client had a document I would sure review it for him.
A person accused of a crime really needs a lawyer by their side at every step.
I went to law school to learn how to help people get through an imperfect system.
I believe it is an advantage for a defense lawyer to have worked as a prosecutor in the past. I learned how prosecution works early on in my career, and I use that knowledge to defend my clients' rights.
Criminal law is exciting and is challenging, and when working as a defense lawyer, you can help improve the system.
I enjoy the challenge of representing a person who is intimidated or discouraged by the system, and who maybe needs some assistance in fighting the good fight. It is not the easy cases that I look to defend.
I have the advantage of having an office assistant who has about 12 years of experience working for criminal defense lawyers. She can help work with clients, but I also give out my cell number to all my clients to contact me when I am on the road.
My best work is done at the trial level or in preparation for trial. I don't do a lot of appeals, but I can refer you to good lawyers.
I enjoy snowboarding, but am not very good at it. I usually go in Stevens County, sometimes after morning court. Also, in my spare time I try to teach myself Italian.
