Firm Focus and History

We focus on Chapters 7 and 13 bankruptcies. We also focus on debtor cases that involve real estate issues.

Previous Employment Summary

I started my firm right after passing the bar. I wanted to start a law practice that was accessible and comfortable for hard-working middle class and blue collar folks. I feel I have achieved my goal.

Activities and Awards

I sit on the Alameda County Bar Association, Barrister's Executive Committee and the Lawyer Referral Service Governing Committee. I am also a volunteer lawyer for the Lawyer in Library program and a pro bono attorney for the volunteer Legal Services Corporation.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I am a strong believer in self-help education. While I would not recommend filing a bankruptcy without the assistance of an attorney, I believe that researching and reading about bankruptcy before calling an attorney will empower you, help you to communicate your need to the attorney and benefit you throughout your bankruptcy or loan modification.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I would be more than happy to do so.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Again, I would be more than happy to do so after speaking with the client and discussing his or her case.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

Primarily to assist my parents who were growing older. Secondly, I wanted a profession that would or could help me to earn a good living while helping other families like the one I grew up in…hardworking, blue collar, with traditional values of honesty and integrity.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I became a lawyer later in life. Before returning to college (at the age of 28), I primarily worked as a cook and chef for a number of restaurants in Holland and Los Angeles. I am acutely aware of how hard many people have work to earn $12 per hour, or what it is like to live without health insurance and other benefits. Therefore, I have a tremendous amount of compassion for many of my clients. And that, without a doubt, makes me a better lawyer. I sincerely care.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I recognized the need and felt it would be a good way to help people who are struggling financially.

What do you like best about your career?

My clients.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, but I am blessed to have a wonderful staff without who I could never achieve the amount of work that I do. 90% of my paralegals have a background in real estate.

What are your strengths and style?

My strengths include a genuine and sincere interest in my clients, their families and their future. It is very difficult to make time for all my clients and to meet with potential new ones. However, I insist on regular meetings with my clients. That is why I am often in the office until 10 p.m. at night or on a Saturday or Sunday. These are the hours some clients can see me or the only ones I have available.

Personal Interests:

My personal interests include spending time with my family, reading good fiction, watching good T.V. such as "The Wire" or "Lost." In case you haven't noticed my photo, I also love good food and good restaurants.

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.
