I attend seminars from the bar associations of which I am a member and purchase law materials from national organizations on topics related to my practice areas.
I recently represented companies that purchased several commercial office properties from a real estate investment trust (REIT), including the company's formation, preparing the corporate documentation, handling the financing for the acquisitions, and dealing with all of the related lease and collection matters.
I have also represented several clients in the purchase and sale of the assets of restaurants. Other matters I have handled relate to the preparation and/or review of business contracts for several small businesses, as well as representing buyers and sellers of residential real estate.

After spending 12 years practicing with small and medium-sized law firms, I moved into a solo legal practice where I could better deliver legal services and advice in a personal and effective manner.
The primary focus of the firm is on commercial real estate, landlord/tenant, financing and business transactions and related legal issues, as well as consumer legal issues relating to residential real estate, simple wills and trusts, and landlord/tenant matters.
I first began my legal career working as an intern in a small law office in Stamford, Connecticut. After passing the bar, I continued with that firm for six years. I helped merge my firm with a larger firm and remained there for another six years before leaving and opening my own solo practice.
I believe that having educated clients is very helpful in effectively representing their interests. Knowing that my client understands what we are trying to accomplish and why is essential to get the best result possible.
I have no problem reviewing client prepared documents. Having said that, sometimes it is more cost-effective for the client if I prepare the documents from the start, as I may have already handled similar matters and can streamline the process.
I don't normally "coach" clients who are representing themselves, as there often can be ethical issues involved. General advice is not a problem, but representing them on a "ghost" basis on a matter can result in misinterpretations between me and my client.
After graduating college in 1978, the job market was tight, and frankly I did not really know what I wanted to do for a career. My step-father was an attorney, and it occurred to me that going to law school would be a wise next step. Whether or not I practiced law, the education would be valuable in any field I decided to pursue. While in law school, I began working as a legal intern and decided to pursue the profession.
Once I left my last law firm and pursued a solo legal career, I also formed my own computer consulting company. I have also been very good at working with computers, software and other gadgets, and was able to parlay that expertise into a decent sideline business. This experience actually worked fairly well in cross marketing my legal and computing businesses, as I primarily worked with small companies, and learned a lot about running a small business and the unique problems that they encounter on a regular basis. Today, most of my practice is delivering legal services to small companies and their owners.
I didn't really choose it, it more or less chose me. While I do handle some litigation matters, I have more of a transactional practice, and I enjoy crafting legal documents more than battling in the trenches of the court room. If I do my job well, there should be less litigation for my clients.
I get to help small companies grow their business and learn about what they do and how they do it. It is like being a part of the businesses I help.
I work for myself without any staff. I am in direct contact with my clients and can better know and understand their needs, which allows me to provide them with the most effective advice.
There are many different styles of lawyers. Some people are looking for "sharks" to represent them. I am not one of the sharks. I prefer a more laid-back style in negotiating for my clients, keeping as many options open for as long as possible, thinking the deal through with my client for long-term results. I am not confrontational, and I have found that for the most part, this works best to achieve my clients' goals.
I am an avid sports fan, have a deep interest in music, and am always interested in the newest gadgets coming on the market. I also enjoy cooking and entertaining, having mastered (sort of) the art of making wine and beer. The next project is an attempt to make cheese.
