I am active in the El Dorado County and Sacramento County Family Law Bar Sections and attend monthly meetings with both groups, which provide me an ongoing education on various topics related to the practice of family law. I meet and exceed the minimum number of continuing education credits required by the State Bar through update classes on statutory and case law as well as ongoing trainings in mediation and collaborative law.
• I have handled complex family law matters involving self-employed clients, and those dividing community businesses.
• I have taken child custody matters to trial with good results for my clients and their children.
• In the collaborative process, I have worked with couples with extremely difficult communication issues that have been able to reach mutually agreeable settlements.
• As a mediator, I have been able to find options for both parties that result in an agreement that both believe to be the best agreement that they could have made.
• I have also obtained injunctive custody orders for parents who are seeking to protect their children from harm.

Zitomer and Roberts, P.C. was established in September, 1982 in Placerville, California. Our office is now located in Cameron Park, west of Placerville in El Dorado County.
For the past 26 years my professional focus has been as a family law attorney and mediator. In that capacity, I work with couples to resolve the disputes that they may have in their divorce process, including helping them create co-parenting agreements, financial agreements and in sensibly dividing their community assets and debts. Over the past three years, I have worked as a family law collaborative attorney. In that process, I work with other legal professionals as well as therapists, counselors, child specialists and financial specialists to provide legal support for the family in transition.
During law school I worked in a labor law firm in San Francisco. I worked as an intern at Consumer's Union in San Francisco in 1979 and 1980. Previous to law school I worked as a paralegal for Truehaft and Walker, a law firm in Oakland and before that I was employed as a legal secretary for a law firm in San Francisco.
I work as a pro tem Settlement Conference Judge with El Dorado County, Family Law Department. I have worked on the board of Legal Services of Northern California. I was employed briefly with California Rural Legal Assistance in the Domestic Relations department in San Francisco.
I encourage clients to research and find information about the law as it affects their case. I believe that well informed clients are able to understand the legal process much better than those who have no such legal information. Obtaining information and education on the legal realities of their case is far better than relying on friends and relatives to advise them as to what is legally possible of "fair."
I am willing to review documents prepared by clients and will do so at my hourly rate which is currently $275 per hour.
I am willing to coach people who are representing themselves in court. I charge my hourly rate for the time that I spend and do not require a retainer for that work.
My personal philosophy in life is to strive for balance and harmony. In my work, I seek to contribute to a cooperative, peaceful and respectful resolution for my clients. I enjoy assisting clients who want to work together to resolve their disputes rather than harm each other. I prefer to work as a mediator and a collaborative attorney because I believe that in the non-adversarial (no court) process the parties are encouraged to be respectful of themselves and their partner and to reach reasonable and wise decisions. In this way, I experience helping the parties move forward in their lives and to create a more secure and positive future for themselves and their families.
My mediation experience has definitely improved my advocacy skills. I have become more able to see the bigger picture and to communicate that to parties who cannot see that far ahead. Working collaborative with other professionals and non-lawyers has improved my ability to see "outside the box" of one individual client. I believe that working in a collaborative process has also increased my understanding of the dynamics of human communication. As to my personal life experience, I have been successfully and happily married for 26 years and have raised two children. This experience has given me compassion for my client's struggles and has contributed to my understanding of the hardship and joy of marriage and parenthood.
I wanted to work with people going through transition in their lives since I feel that this is how I am best able to contribute my skills and knowledge. I enjoy working with people to find answers to legal issues in family law matters rather than wage war against their spouse.
Working with couples who are more focused on their children's well being rather than winning and/or losing "points" to their former spouse. I also enjoy educating people about their legal rights and obligations which allows them to make better choices for their future. I enjoy working with people who want and need my help.
We are a two attorney firm. We both carry our respective case loads, although my partner and I work together on bankruptcy cases as I am expanding my practice into that area and he has been practicing Bankruptcy for many years. We have an excellent paralegal that is of immense help to the firm in working with clients both in determining their need for assistance and in responding to their needs while we focus on the legal issues.
My strengths are in negotiation and mediation where I work at finding the best settlement agreement within the confines of the facts of the case. My style is open and friendly and I generally enjoy my work.
I enjoy yoga, the outdoors, hiking, baking, cooking and spending time with family and friends. I also love my husband of 26 years who is infinitely fascinating as well as my children who are continually enlightening.
