Firm Focus and History

Although I am based in Naples, Florida, I consider it to be an honor to represent the citizens and businesses of Collier, Lee, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades Counties in Federal, State and County Court. These five counties comprise the 20th Judicial Circuit. It is in this Circuit, and within these Counties, that I focus my practice. There are many trustworthy and competent lawyers practicing in the State of Florida and I would like to be recognized along with them for my work in Southwest Florida. I have engaged in the private practice of law since 1989.

Previous Employment Summary

I graduated law school in 1987. From 1987 through 1989, I was a Law Clerk for the Hon. Mark A. Cosentino in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. After completing my two-year appointment as a Federal Law Clerk, I was employed by the firm of Kerby, Cooper, English, Danis & Garvin from 1989 through 1992. In 1993, I opened my own law office.

Activities and Awards

I am an AV-rated attorney. This is the highest rating accorded an attorney by Martindale Hubbell. I am also a member of the Collier County Foreclosure Task Force and perform pro bono services for the Collier County Legal Aid Society.

Most recently, I was selected to be a judge for the Collier County Mock Trial competition. For over ten years I was a pro bono arbitrator for the Civil Court of the City of New York. I have also been appointed to the Collier County Code Enforcement Board for a four year term.

Other organizations in which I am currently involved include: Naples Toastmasters (President), Collier County Republican Club (Treasurer), Naples Elks (ER), Naples American Legion, Naples AmVets, BNI, Naples Sunset Rotary, Knights of Columbus, and The Naples Chamber of Commerce.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

It is always a win-win situation when you have an educated client. It is my experience that clients who have educated themselves in respect to their particular legal issue always understand the legal process better and have a more reasonable expectation as to what can be accomplished on their behalf.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am always willing to review documents prepared by my clients. Just recently, a business client asked me to review a contract he prepared. It was written so expertly that only minor changes needed to be made. By reviewing documents that the client has prepared, a better understanding of that client's legal needs may be developed. Additionally, the client's issue may be resolved with fewer legal fees.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Although I do not mind assisting clients who would like to undertake a set of negotiations themselves, it is very difficult to coach a client through litigation. Litigation requires the education, experience and training only a seasoned legal practitioner possesses.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

When I was 17 years of age, I joined the United States Navy and was stationed aboard a destroyer for fours years. While in the Navy, I traveled the world and saw a great deal of injustice first-hand. After being honorably discharged, I went to the City University of New York for my undergraduate studies and then on to New York Law School. It is my hope that I can lessen the injustice in society by being an ethical attorney and vigorous advocate for my clients.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have earned three graduate degrees, two of which are in law (JD and LLM), and the other in accountancy (MBA). The study and practice of law is an all-consuming endeavor. The law is constantly changing and with it so must the attorney. I pride myself on keeping up to date in my particular areas of expertise which include criminal, business, and family law. That is why I am constantly reviewing new developments in the law and attending continuing legal education seminars. There is, however, no better way to keep your skills sharpened than being actively engaged in the practice of law on a daily basis, as I am.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Although over the last 22 years, I have represented clients in almost every area of the law, I find it difficult for attorneys to keep up with the changes in all but a select few areas. That is why most attorneys narrow the focus of their practice, much like doctors.

What do you like best about your career?

Many clients consult a lawyer as a last resort. These clients have usually lost sleep over their legal predicament. They need reassurance that all is not lost and a plan for overcoming their legal problems. Other clients will not make a move without consulting their lawyer first. They are much more in command of the situation but still need expert legal advice. I consider it a privilege to be consulted by these clients for my expertise. I greatly appreciate the opportunity, and solemnly undertake, to resolve the client's legal issues in an ethical, cost-efficient, and favorable manner.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a sole practitioner and am very selective about the cases that I accept. This permits me to give my clients the kind of personalized attention and care that they deserve. I also have a wonderful paralegal, Celeste, who has a wealth of knowledge and is attentive to the immediate needs of my clients.

What are your strengths and style?

I am an advocate for my clients first and foremost. It is my mission to achieve the best possible outcome for my clients. In this respect I am very detailed-oriented and thoroughly understand the law. If I am retained by a client, I will personally handle the matter from start to finish. It is my practice to work closely with the client to first completely understand the nature of the legal problem and then propose acceptable solutions.

If litigation must be undertaken, it will be conducted in the most professional and cost-efficient manner possible. In this regard, the client is always kept informed of the status of the case and all major decisions are discussed with the client in advance. I have found that open and frequent communication with the client is absolutely vital to the attorney-client relationship.

Personal Interests:

Although I live in sunny Naples, Southwest Florida, I enjoy trekking through the mountains. In June of 2008, I climbed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340') in Tanzania, East Africa. In 2010 I am scheduled to climb the highest peak in South America. While at home in Southwest Florida, I enjoy the beach with my wife and four children, and try to swim in the Gulf as often as possible.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

It depends on your case.

Hourly Rates

My hourly rate for litigation and business law services is quite reasonable.

Free Initial Consultation?

I offer a free one half-hour consultation.

Typical Retainer

The retainer fee is typically an estimate of the number of hours that I would expend working on a client's file in the first month after being retained. Thus, the size of the retainer would depend on the client's immediate legal needs and the scope of the legal services to be provided. I try very hard not to charge a retainer, which is a burden for the client to pay. It is my practice to work with the client so that my legal services are affordable.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
