My firm was established in 2003. I've been the principal lawyer in the firm, and I have one assistant.
My firm provides transactional legal support to small and mid-sized companies, entrepreneurs, and individuals. I assist clients with a variety of contractual and business matters, including software licensing and technology-related agreements (both inbound and outbound). Some of my recent client engagements have included assisting a mid-size software company with its outbound software licensing agreements, assisting technology clients with hosting, software-as-a-service, telecom, and other technology services agreements, assisting clients with leases and general business contracts, and assisting clients with incorporating their businesses.
I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric, San Francisco, as a consulting attorney from 2002-2007. Prior to that, I worked for Metricom, Inc., a wireless data services provider, as in-house counsel from 1998 - 2001. Prior to Metricom, I worked as a consultant for various Bay Area law firms and companies, and prior to those consulting engagements, for Pacific Bell Mobile Services from 1995-1997, where my main focus was managing wireless voice and lease agreements. Prior to coming to the Bay Area in 1995, I worked as an Associate for Kerstein & Kerstein, in Newton, Massachusetts, from 1993 - 1995, where I handled both civil and criminal litigation matters.
Received Pro Bono Services Award from the Bar Association of San Francisco in 2004; Outstanding Barrister of the Year award from the Bar Association of San Francisco in 1999; San Francisco Women's Centers Board Member from 2004 - 2008 (Board President from 2006 - 2008); volunteer attorney with the Bar Association of San Francisco's Volunteer Legal Services Program.
I believe that clients need to educate themselves about legal issues, and I'm pleased when I have a well-informed client who is interested in the law and legal issues.
Yes, I am willing to review documents and templates prepared by clients but of course will offer my own professional opinion and provide any necessary edits and revisions in order to protect the client's interests.
The nature of my work is such is that quite often, contract negotiations may be handled by a business person. I would not have an issue with the client leading a negotiation so long as I would provide the necessary language and revisions in order to protect the client's interests. Many of my clients take the lead in an initial negotiation on the business terms of an agreement and then have me review the legal terms. I'm fine with this approach, so long as the client understands that I will only be reviewing and approving the legal terms in this arrangement.
I enjoyed learning about the American and European legal systems and had a particular interest in the Constitution and the originals of American democracy. The idea that lawyers protect individual freedoms and rights was probably the main influencing factor for me to become a lawyer.
I had some demanding work experiences early in my career which taught me the importance of providing a quality work product and being thorough. My family taught me the importance of ethics.
I enjoy working with technology and business clients. My personality is much more geared towards transactional practice vs. litigation. I also enjoy working with clients collaboratively on transactions and negotiating deals so that both sides come away with a feeling of success.
I like the fact that I get to work with innovative clients who are excited about their businesses.
I am a solo practitioner so clients work directly with me. I make myself readily accessible by phone and email.
I believe that I communicate well with clients and that they understand that they can always approach me with a question and concern. I believe in honest, open, and frequent communication and respond to client requests promptly.
I enjoy travel, reading, walking, and music.
Amy Charest.
