I enjoy working with middle income families and individuals who are interested in planning ways to protect themselves and their families in case of crisis. I like helping families deal with the legal aspects of crisis and loss so that they can focus on the emotional process.

The most frequent cases that I handle are cases where families, often parents with small children, come to me to put together an estate plan to make sure the family is protected in case of disability or death. Because of my holistic practice, I also get to work with a lot of non-traditional families including blended families and same-sex couples. I also work with single individuals. Estate planning packages typically include wills, powers of attorney and health care directives. They may also include living trust, credit shelter trusts, children's trusts, or special needs trusts. Clients also get help deciding how to title real estate and designate beneficiaries.
I also help adult children who need to set up guardianships for their parents and help them explore less restrictive alternatives to avoid guardianship.
When clients experience a loss, I assist clients with probate, trust administration, or other methods of assets of transfer.
In family law, I work with clients who have already come to an arrangement on their assets or plan to with the help of an independent mediator. I assist them in navigating the necessary paperwork and court procedure to make their agreement final.
In immigration, I help clients apply to get green cards for family members and naturalize.

I think the most important part of estate planning is the wisdom of the choices and decisions that clients make. I work with planning clients on a flat fee basis so that they can ask as many questions as necessary to make the best choices for them. I also encourage them to talk to other professionals in their lives such as financial planners, counselors, and clergy. I also provide a library of materials for check out.
I am willing to review documents for an hourly fee. However, I often find that this does not save the client expenses.
I am willing to assist probate and/or divorce clients in representing themselves.
I wanted to assist individuals and families in making the legal system work for them to achieve their goals and avoid unnecessary conflict.
My most important role is educating clients on the legal system and assisting them to make wise choices for themselves. I learn from each person and family that I work with and become more familiar with the process that goes into making good choices.
I began working in estate planning as part of my pro bono practice working with impoverished clients with AIDS and HIV to set up disability and estate plans. Because these clients did not have much in the way of assets, the focus of our work was on who would make healthcare and financial choices if they could not make them for themselves, who would care for their children and who they would leave the legacy they wanted with their family and community. I came to see that these are the most important choices for anyone regardless of their financial situation and started Phinney Estate Law was a way to help clients make plans that put these issues front and center.
I enjoy my clients and like giving them peace of mind about the future and assistance in trying times.
I am a solo practitioner, so all my clients work directly with me.
I am committed to helping clients make good choices. I pride myself in being casual and low key. I want clients to be empowered to make their own choices and to make the decisions that are best for them. My role is to ask questions and point out options.
I volunteer my time to a number of local community groups including the Seattle Milk Fund, Phinney EcoVillage, Phinney-Greenwood Climate Change Action Now, and the Greenwood Arts Council and am the elected Democratic PCO for my neighborhood. I am a practicing Quaker with the Salmon Bay Friends Circle. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends and love spending as much time as possible enjoying the outdoors. I am in three book clubs and I am always looking for a good book. I also carve and print block prints which can occasionally be seen in shops and coffee houses in the Phinney-Greenwood neighborhood.
