Preferred New Clients
My typical clients are individuals or married couples who have acquired substantial consumer debt and reached a point where they are having difficulty making their monthly payments. Sometimes they are behind on their house or auto payments and are facing foreclosure or repossession. Through Chapter 7 or Chapter 13, we can usually take the pressure off by either discharging or reorganizing debts. Typically, this can be accomplished without losing any property and frequently prevent the loss of a home or vehicle. A typical consumer Chapter 7 takes about three to four months to complete. A Chapter 13 usually runs three to five years before finishing and receiving a discharge from the Court.

Probate Judge for the Town of Bristol from 1978 through 1984 where I presided over cases involving the probating of wills, estate administration, guardianships and adoptions.
Hearing Commission on Rhode Island's Racing and Athletics Hearing Board 1990 to 1995 where I presided on a three-officer panel hearing disputes and agency appeals.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
Anyone facing a legal issue should educate himself or herself as much as possible about the issues affecting them. Part of our mission is to educate and guide our clients to help them achieve their desired results. The better informed our clients are, the more we can help them achieve the best results.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I often review documents prepared by clients. Some need little guidance, and others need more. Either way, they get our best advice and effort.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Bankruptcy attorneys are not allowed to coach people without putting their name on the representation. I have coached clients who want to represent themselves in other areas of the law. Bankruptcy law is not an area where I encourage people to do it alone. It is true that many cases are routine, but there are forms, procedures, requirements and negotiation sessions in the process that is beyond the ability of the average citizen. An attorney can make a significant difference in any court proceeding.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
My decision to become an attorney was generally a vocational one. I wanted flexibility in my work, to be self-employed, and to be able to spend time with my family. My father was in the diplomatic corps and self employed for all of his adult life. I have always had the ability to listen, communicate well with people and complete administrative tasks for a positive result. My personal philosophy is to contribute to society in the most positive way. I am highly motivated to help and have found no better way to achieve this than by practicing law.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
After representing thousands of clients in bankruptcy, I am generally able to steer new clients in the right direction. I can give clients options that work well for them. I have talked many people out of bankruptcy where it was not in their best interests, but I am a firm believer in the benefits of bankruptcy. An individual's quality of life can be greatly improved when debt has become oppressive. I think my belief in the system and my extensive experience makes me a better lawyer. I am a generalist not a specialist. A well-rounded legal experience is imperative in truly representing a client to the fullest of one's ability.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
My undergraduate background is accounting, which combined with my legal ability has helped me in counseling clients who find themselves in financial difficulty.
What do you like best about your career?
Every case brings new opportunities and challenges. My career helps me to continue to grow and improve. It is satisfying to make a difference in others' lives.
Tell us about your law firm:
We are a small law firm, so all of my clients deal directly with me. My secretary/legal assistant is attentive and sensitive to our clients' immediate needs and has a wealth of knowledge to provide personal service.
What are your strengths and style?
I have a strong sense of justice and desire to help. I like to take a client "as they are" and answer the questions they want answered. I am candid and straightforward with my clients and like to develop a team working relationship with them. I listen.
Personal Interests:
I enjoy music, song writing and home studio recording. I am also a firearms enthusiast and work at target proficiency. I enjoy golf, skiing and sailing. I am also devoted to my pet cat "Miss Kitty."

Fixed-Price Services and Fees
Attorney's fees vary depending on the complexity of the case and the issues involved. However, most cases are routine and can be handled with reasonable fees. Chapter 7 cases usually $1,500. Chapter 13 cases usually $2,500. We work with you so that you can pay through a payment plan over time, although our policy is to file upon receipt of payment in full.
Hourly Rates
$175 to $225 depending on whether the time is spent in the office or in court.
Free Initial Consultation?
My initial consultation fee is $60, which is applied toward the total fee if retained.
Typical Retainer
The typical retainer is $500.
Nolo's Licensing Check
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
