Firm Focus and History

My firm focuses on quality, affordable representation. After years of public service, I found the average citizen had difficulty getting quality representation. The indigent qualified for free legal assistance, and the wealthy could afford private lawyer fees. I try to serve the average citizen caught in the middle.

The Law Offices of Joyce B. Bartizal & Associates was established in 1991 on a part-time basis and converted to a full-service firm in 2007.

Previous Employment Summary

1998-2007: Assistant Public Defender with the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender.
1993-1998: Staff Attorney, Office of the Chief Judge - Cook County Circuit Courts.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe clients need to fully inform themselves and seek professional legal help. An informed client is a good client, but where the information comes from makes a difference. The internet is helpful, but incomplete.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am willing to review documents prepared by clients and provide constructive comments.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am willing to assist clients who are representing themselves at a reduced rate/fee.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became a lawyer to be part of the best legal system in the world, to make sure rights remain protected, and to help those who don't have the resources to adequately help themselves.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have lived in different parts of the world with people of different cultures. I believe my sensitivity to those differences and my experiences help me communicate with clients and understand their needs, actions and worries.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

The need of friends, family and the general public ended up determining my primary area of practice.

What do you like best about your career?

The freedom to help others without constraint when working with the system, rather than for the system.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner, so clients deal with me a majority of the time. Occasionally an associate will assist with complex cases or when I have a conflict in scheduling. Clients will never be passed off to an assistant or paralegal so I can be in full contact with my clients and their needs.

What are your strengths and style?

I communicate with clients directly in easy-to-understand language. All legal terminology is explained in clear terms.

Personal Interests:

Scuba diving, motorcycle riding, travel, and dogs.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
