Continuing Education

I attend continuing legal education seminars on the topics of criminal and immigration law. I always exceed the required amount of continuing education hours.

Example Cases

I've handled cases in the past that were erroneously denied, but after I pointed to the errors present, the immigration service reversed their decisions. I have represented immigrants who were denied citizenship, until I got immigration services to review the cases again and subsequently approve the applications. I've also dealt with DUI cases which would have created immigration problems, but were dismissed or reduced to manageable levels.

Firm Focus and History

Our firm was established in 2001.

Our firm focuses on helping immigrants and their families with all their immigration-related needs. We also defend clients in criminal prosecution that may have immigration consequences, and help them to establish their own businesses and homes in Arizona.

Previous Employment Summary

I was judicial clerk to Judge Beverly Nettles-Nickerson, the chief Judge of the 54th District in Lansing, Michigan, while I was in law school. Additionally, I interned for the California State Attorney General's Office (Licensing Section) in Los Angeles just before graduating from law school. I also worked as a legal assistant to the Onyejekwe Law Firm handling immigration cases from 1999 to 2001. I have been at Kanu & Associates, P.C. since December of 2001 handling criminal law, immigration law and small business transactions.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I encourage self-education, however, the internet cannot replace a specialized assessment by an attorney.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am willing to review client-prepared documents, but without liability for their work.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I have in the past, especially with straight-forward cases.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I have always given people advice on many issues and enjoy helping solve problems on an ongoing basis, so I decided to get licensed to do what I love. I believe many people have an idea what they want, but they may not know how to get there. I am part of the solution.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I was an immigrant as a student in India, later moving back to Nigeria and immigrating to the United States in 1991. Having been through the immigration process, I am now a U.S. citizen and have also operated my own businesses. In short, I have been there and done that, so I want to help others navigate the waters.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I chose this area of practice because I want to help immigrants. The United States looks friendly to immigrants on the surface, but it takes skill to live and succeed here. It is the land of the free, but if you want to make it home, you must be brave. I have the skill to help you brave it.

What do you like best about your career?

I like helping people move from nowhere to somewhere. I cannot count how many times my clients start crying when I tell them that they are now lawful, permanent residents or citizens of the United States of America. People who are in removal proceedings turn around and have the proceedings cancelled or concluded and their former "no status" changes to that of a lawful, permanent resident.

Tell us about your law firm:

I have experienced paralegals helping with the work and language.

What are your strengths and style?

I have passion to help people. I tell people the truth about their situation and have them take interest in their affairs. I tell them that if I could make it into this country, they can, too.

Personal Interests:

I am married with three children, and I love to spend a lot of time with them.
