We focus on consumer-friendly debt relief, debt settlement and bankruptcy, along with personal injury cases. We specialize in streamlining the bankruptcy process for clients, including arranging the credit counseling (which is now required).
I began my practice in 1985 in Iowa and have offered legal services for virtually every type of legal need. I specialize in debt relief and bankruptcy, with over 23 years experience in these areas of law.
I have owned and operated my own law firm since 1985.
Nominated for Attorney General of Iowa on the Libertarian third party ticket in 2002. Campaign Manager for Richard Campagna, nominated for Vice President of the United States in 2004. Pro Bono work for Legal Aid.
In order to help clients understand the terminology and frame-work of a bankruptcy case, I have extensive materials available for free on my website, including a frequently asked questions page, as well as videos answering commonly asked questions.
I appreciate clients being well-prepared and organized. The bankruptcy process depends on clients providing accurate information concerning their financial status and circumstances.
I normally do not recommend clients representing themselves, given the complexity of issues involved.
I often found myself arguing on behalf of others, even in Junior High School. I was called "Judd for the Defense" (a popular TV. show at the time) by my friends. I realized I wanted to understand how society functioned so that I could help make needed changes. Law School was the only compelling choice that made sense to me. I very much enjoy helping others, which my law practice facilitates.
I am a voracious student of government and politics. I ran for Attorney General of Iowa in 2002 on a third party ticket. I enjoy developing real estate, including residential apartments and commercial office space. I am currently developing a commercial building for a gourmet health food deli.
My current primary area of practice allows me to help individuals and families get a "fresh start" to their financial life. At a time when governments are bailing out banks to the tune of billions of dollars, it is clear that individuals often need financial relief as well.
I enjoy meeting new clients and helping them "get back on the road to freedom", as my television advertising emphasizes.
I am very blessed to have Joyce Calhoun as my chief paralegal. Joyce has over ten years experience in debt relief and is extremely committed to staying on top of any changes in the law. She regularly attends continuing legal education seminars and national conferences, even though she is not required to do so. She is also very warm and friendly with the clients who often tell me that they do not feel judged in any way by her, or by anyone in our office.
I also am very fortunate to have Jackie Lane as our receptionist. Jackie is very upbeat and friendly, as well as proficient in her duties. In addition, Millie Gastone works part-time at the office (hopefully moving to full-time). Millie has worked many years as a legal assistant and provides great levity and competence in her duties. Al Garrison (who also maintains a Des Moines office) is "of counsel" and helps tremendously with our hearings in Des Moines.
I love what I do and that it helps people resolve the financial strain they are suffering. Having been raised in a working class family on a small farm in Nebraska, I easily identify with the people and families that come to my office. I purposefully maintain a casual demeanor and an upbeat outlook on life.
I enjoy riding my motorcycle, camping, fishing and traveling to new places.
