I began my sole-practitioner practice in Walnut Creek in 1994, specializing in small business and general civil law. While I have had quite a bit of litigation experience over the years, I now try to confine my practice to organizing and assisting start-up business ventures, and advising small business owners on legal matters such as employment, contracts, licenses, taxes, and commercial arrangements with other companies.
Twenty-five years in the practice of admiralty, then maritime administrative law, with Graham & James, a large international law firm, at its base in San Francisco. I represented steamship conferences, container operators, cruise lines, and various agents and brokers in the steamship business locally and abroad. This included organizing new maritime ventures and businesses, which I found the most rewarding part of the practice, and then I left the firm to pursue on a local level in the early 1990s.

It is usually very helpful to me when the client has some basic understanding of the legal framework and available options respecting the project.
Certainly! It is usually quite beneficial to have a "running start" on what the clients want done.
I am perfectly willing to coach (and have done so from time-to-time) though I only recommend self-representation when there is not a significant amount at stake.
I was not very good at science or math!
With seven years of higher education and 41 years of practicing law, most of them in the fast lane, I have garnered a lot of scar tissue.
I like the enthusiasm and excitement brought by a client starting up a new business, and often a new career.
I enjoy preparing for the future by assisting in new projects much more than trying to minimize damage for past mistakes or misunderstandings, such as handling claims in litigation, though I have done a lot of both.
I am by myself. I have full time receptionist coverage and I am available via electronically.
It is probably having a wide range of experience both in subject matter and law practice activities.
I believe clients can tell I am not only behind their endeavors 100% but am enjoying it!
I have been married to the same lovely wife for 35 years, and we have three terrific sons, all of whom played sports in high school and college, two at Cal and one at UCLA, and all still in the area. I play golf (with a high handicap!) and have season tickets to Stanford football and the Oakland A's. I was also Secretary and General Counsel to Royal Viking Line and Seabourn Cruise Line.
