In 1999, I opened my own practice, with offices in downtown Columbus, Ohio and downtown Delaware, Ohio. I recently relocated my office to Powell, Ohio.
I practice criminal defense exclusively and focus on representing clients charged with DUI/OVI. I represent clients in Columbus, Delaware, and other courts in the central Ohio area.
I have practiced criminal defense for my entire career. In law school, I worked for a criminal defense attorney. After graduating from law school in 1997, I formed a partnership with that attorney.
I served two terms as the chair of the Columbus Bar Association's Criminal Law Committee.
I recommend that clients become educated about the law that applies to their situations. I am in favor of clients educating themselves on legal issues, but I would advise people to be cautious in what they conclude when reading from second-hand sources rather than directly from statutes, regulations, and cases.
I am willing to review documents prepared by my clients, but this situation does not arise frequently in criminal and DUI/OVI cases.
I would not want my doctor to coach me on how to perform my own surgery, and I do not recommend that people represent themselves in DUI/OVI cases or criminal cases.
I believe everyone has abilities that make them well-suited for certain vocations. My abilities (logical reasoning, reading comprehension, communication) make me well-suited for being a lawyer.
I have practiced criminal defense for my entire career. I have handled thousands of cases, ranging from speeding tickets to murder, and everything in between. I have taken many cases to trial. Although this may be a client's first time facing this experience, I have been there before. I have undergone specialized training for DUI/OVI defense, including a course in the science of evidential alcohol testing, a course in field sobriety testing, and a course through the National College for DUI Defense.
One of my influences during high school was a prosecuting attorney, so I have been interested in criminal law from an early age. During my undergraduate work, I studied Criminology and Political Science. During law school, I took elective courses in the area of criminal law.
I enjoy helping clients, and I enjoy the intellectual challenge of finding ways to help them.
My practice is simple; my office consists of me and one administrative assistant. I limit the number of cases I take so I can provide personal service to my clients. I prefer to represent fewer clients with excellence rather than many clients with mediocrity.
My strength is that I focus my practice on one area of law so I can do it with excellence. My goal is to effectively represent my clients. To that end, I conduct thorough research and analysis of the facts and the applicable law, then communicate effectively with my clients, prosecutors and judges. Effectiveness does not equal aggressiveness. I communicate with prosecutors and judges with professionalism and respect, just as I do with my clients and people in general.
I play drums at my church and for a local band.

I charge flat fees, so clients know at the beginning of my representation the amount of the fee.
This is not applicable.
I offer a free initial case evaluation that typically lasts about 30 minutes.
I do not have a typical retainer. The flat fee for my services is either paid-in-full when I begin representation or paid in two equal payments.
