Firm Focus and History

I always wanted to return to historic Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tennessee, to establish a law practice. I have maintained my office in Rogersville since 1983. It is conveniently located so I can easily serve clients throughout East Tennessee. I regularly provide assistance for clients from Hawkins, Greene, Hamblen, Sullivan, Washington, Hancock, Grainger, Knox, Carter, Jefferson, Cocke, and Claiborne counties, as well as other areas of East Tennessee.

I established the Law Office of Mark Skelton in 1983 as a consumer law practice with an emphasis in social security disability and consumer bankruptcy. I focus on providing the highest quality representation and advocacy on behalf of persons seeking social security and/or supplemental security income disability benefits and on behalf of people filing for bankruptcy relief under the United States Bankruptcy Code. My law office is a debt relief agency and is dedicated to the representation and protection of the rights of consumer bankruptcy debtors. We also provide assistance to clients with cases involving probate, estates, wills, family law, divorce, adoption, conservatorship, personal injury and criminal defense.

Previous Employment Summary

After obtaining my law degree, I established the Law Office of Mark Skelton in Rogersville, Tennessee.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I always recommend that clients discuss their circumstances with an attorney to verify all of their available options for relief. I provide free initial consultations.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am always willing to review at the free initial consultation any documents prepared by clients. Then we can discuss the available options, any anticipated problems and suggested changes, as well as the advantages available to the client in having an attorney for their case.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I provide free initial consultations to discuss the circumstances and options for each individual case.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I always wanted an occupation where I could provide assistance to individuals. Being a lawyer with a social security and consumer bankruptcy practice allows me to directly help consumers in providing personal attention to their particular problems. I treat clients with respect in leading them through their case. For bankruptcy clients, it is very satisfying to help them obtain a fresh start and receive relief from creditor harassment. I spend time with clients dispelling the myths they have heard about bankruptcy and explaining their property exemptions. It is also very satisfying to help disabled individuals receive the disability benefits to which they are entitled.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Unlike large law firms where the lawyer is accountable to the profit margin of the overall firm and often may have limited contact with each individual client, I get to know every client and personally meet with each of them to discuss their circumstances and options and to explain the documents prepared for their case to them before signing and to prepare clients for hearings. I give clients the personal attention which I think is lacking at many other law offices. I have lived in East Tennessee my entire life and understand the needs and problems facing the citizens of our communities. I represent individuals - I do not represent corporations and creditors.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I enjoy helping the general consumer and individual. A social security and bankruptcy practice allows me to help these individuals in great need due to their circumstances. Many clients are overwhelmed by their circumstances and do not understand their options for relief and need help in making it through the difficult process and necessary documentation made necessary by the regulations, laws, and procedures necessary to be successful with a social security or bankruptcy case.

What do you like best about your career?

My legal career has allowed me to meet and personally provide legal assistance to thousands of individuals throughout East Tennessee and beyond. It has also allowed me to be very active in my community and surrounding region. The Law Office of Mark Skelton founded and sponsors a series of trail and road race running events in East Tennessee called the Skelton Law Racing Series. These races include the Surgoinsville 10-Miler road race, Bays Mountain Trail Race 15-miler, Wolf Run 7- Miler trail race, Laurel Run Ascent 11-mile trail race, Phipps Bend 5K road race, Firecracker 4-Miler road race, CASA 8K road race & Kid's Mile, and Miracle Mile & Relays. I personally serve as the race director for all of the races. I am also on the boards of numerous community organizations in the region.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner. All my clients have extensive contacts with me about their case. I also have a great staff to assist in obtaining all the necessary information and for the preparation of all the necessary documentation for cases. My senior legal assistant for Social Security and SSI disability cases is a registered nurse and is very helpful with understanding the client's medical issues, obtaining the necessary medical records, and assisting in the preparation of the case and brief for hearings. My legal assistants for bankruptcy cases have had many years of experience in dealing with the types of financial documentation and information necessary for bankruptcy cases. My staff understands the circumstances you are facing and are here to help you through your case.

What are your strengths and style?

All clients receive my personal attention. I will meet with each client at the initial conference before my law office is retained to fully prepare them for the hearing. I meet with each client many other times depending on the client's circumstances and needs. We will discuss all details about the hearing so the client will know what to expect, including the types of questions that will be asked of the client during the hearing and the details about the particular Judge or Trustee before whom they will be appearing.

Personal Interests:

My personal interests include running, bicycling, canoeing, and backpacking. I have been fortunate in being able to take canoeing, backpacking, and bicycling trips throughout the United States and Canada, including spending two weeks on a wilderness river canoe trip in northern Alaska, bicycling the entire Natchez Trace Parkway and Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline Drive, as well as many other backpack and canoeing trips. My wonderful wife and I were married in 1979 and we have two children.
