I established my solo practice in 1991.
I provide personalized services in the areas of trademark, copyright, licensing, and related intellectual property transactions. My practice includes brand development and counseling; trademark and copyright registration, maintenance, and protection; and preparation of licensing agreements. My clients include apparel, furniture care, consumer product, and pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors; designers, artists, and authors; engineering firms; food and beverage companies; vegetable and flower growers; restaurants; software companies; universities; and wineries.
Prior to starting my solo practice, I was a partner in the Law Offices of Stuart and Harris, in San Luis Obispo.
I am a member of the Executive Committee of the California State Bar Intellectual Property Section, and the Vice-Chair of the Trademark Committee. I am a Past President of the San Luis Obispo County Women Lawyers Association, and a former Board Member of the San Luis Obispo County Bar Association. I am a Past President of the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo, and past Assistant District Governor for Rotary District 5240. I was the Founder of the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, and served as its Executive Director from 1993 to 2002. I serve on the Cal Poly Corporation Board of Directors, Cal Poly College of Liberal Arts Advisory Council, and Cal Poly Alumni Association Board. I was the Cal Poly College of Liberal Arts Alumna of the Year in 1995, and am a recipient of the John L. Seitz Award for Community Service from the San Luis Obispo County Bar Association.
I believe that clients who take the initiative to educate themselves about the issues that arise in intellectual property will make our conference time more productive and efficient. Educated clients will better understand my role in assisting them in the development and protection of their intellectual property portfolio.
I welcome client preparation of outlines of their objectives, lists of questions, and notes regarding the history of development of their intellectual property. These types of documents help me to understand the background of the client, whether an individual or a company, what they hope to accomplish in the protection of their intellectual property, and what guidance and assistance I can provide.
I have, on occasion, assisted in preparing a template for clients to follow in the preparation of copyright applications. The trademark application process, as well as the preparation of intellectual property agreements such as licensing agreements, assignments, consent agreements, and the like, are very specialized, complicated projects and do not lend themselves to clients representing themselves.
I enjoy working with people, and I wanted to be in a profession that provided helpful and desired services to others.
My first position as an attorney was working as an associate for a solo practitioner who became my mentor. He taught me about how to listen to clients, how to review your bill in the context of the value you provided through your services, and to keep a good sense of humor. I tend to take a very personal interest in my clients, and feel that it is important to know them as individuals as well as clients.
I like the creativity, the variety of projects I get to work on, and the opportunity to work collaboratively with clients in protecting their intellectual property assets.
I like learning about different businesses and creative endeavors through my clients.
I am a solo practitioner, so I work directly with all of my clients. My assistant is very much a people person who has a great deal of experience working with clients and helping them to provide the information we need to work on their project.
Our office is informal yet professional. I care very much about the impression our office creates, and we pride ourselves on accuracy, being knowledgeable, paying attention to detail, and achieving a favorable outcome for our clients in a friendly and courteous environment.
I enjoy reading, food and wine, films, music, travel.

Due to the nature of the services I provide, it is not possible to offer a fixed fee. There are a number of variables involved in each trademark or copyright registration, including the scope of protection desired by the client, potential issues raised by the Trademark or Copyright Office, and individual facts of each case; all of these determine the legal fees charged for the matter. Once I know what the client's objectives are, and the pertinent information, I can usually provide an estimate of the fees and costs required to get an application on file.
$300 per hour.
I do not offer a free initial consultation, but if the client mentions that he or she found me through my Nolo profile, I will offer a discounted initial consultation fee.
Where a retainer is required, it is usually between $2,000 and $5,000, plus costs.
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
