Bankruptcy
I prefer to represent individuals in Chapter 7 bankruptcy matters.

I represented a partnership in a bankruptcy case. One of the partner's sons died of AIDS. A law firm in Louisiana called me and informed me that four pharmaceutical companies had produced blood for hemophiliacs which were infected with the AIDS virus. The partner's son was one of thousands of people who were infected with and/or died because of the infected plasma. A class action lawsuit was filed in a federal district court in Illinois. The companies offered a settlement which the victims could either accept or preserve their right to a trial. The federal district court judge issued orders for those victims who wished to settle their cases with the pharmaceutical companies. For some California victims, there wasn't a procedure to obtain a California order requested by the federal court judge. I created my own procedure in California, which was accepted in all four California counties where a claim was filed.
I filed a petition for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy for a client. The client incurred over $360,000 in unsecured debt. The bankruptcy trustee inquired how the client intended to repay those obligations at the time the debts were incurred. The client was bipolar. For one year, I supplied the bankruptcy trustee with medical information regarding the behavior of people who suffer from being bipolar. All of the client's obligations were discharged in the bankruptcy case.

I've been practicing law for 30 years. The focus of my firm has always been families and the problems which arise such as dissolutions, bankruptcy, and small businesses.
I primarily handle family law and bankruptcy matters. In addition, I teach law school and matters involving civil litigation and advise and form business entities.
I am and have been a law professor and sole practitioner for the past 30 years.
I received an Honorary Doctorate of Law. I have also received several "Who's Who in American Law" awards.
I also am an arbitrator and mediator for the courts in San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties.
I think this is very important. It's easier for me to work with clients who are familiar with the procedures. I think it's important to demystify the whole process. If a client has taken the time to learn even a little bit, it makes the entire process much easier since they know what to expect in their legal matters.
I regularly review documents prepared by clients.
I advise and instruct the clients on how to present their case. However, I further explain that the legal system is not consumer friendly and highly advise them to reconsider their decision to appearing in court without counsel.
My childhood dream was to become an attorney. I was fortunate to have a high school teacher who encouraged me to go to law school and pursue my dream.
I believe that being a Professor of Law has helped me in the practice of law.
When I first started practicing, I realized that I just wanted to help people, whether in small business matters or family problems. My business grew as new clients brought different and unique problems to my attention. When one starts to deal with families, it becomes apparent that there are many problems which can arise. My practice evolves along with the different needs of my clients. I feel like my clients and I come to share a bond like a family. A client once said, "You're an attorney for the people." I took this as a great compliment.
I really enjoy what I do and being able to help people to solve their problems. Furthermore, I like helping people get their lives back in order and focus on the fact that these situations are temporary, and that the future will be brighter.
Terry is indispensable to my law practice and I can't say enough good things about her.
My biggest strength is patience. I am thoughtful and I like to figure out where I want to go before I leap into a case. I've been told I'm a great strategist.
I like reading, writing, gardening and food. I like to travel, though I seldom have the chance to get away.
Terry Vandell.
